'Mata Hari': 'Besties' BTOB Changsub and Mamamoo Solar cast together in musical

While Changsub has acted in musicals like 'Marie Antoinette' before, this is Solar's musical debut

Following the news of K-pop idols making their Broadway debut, we have more idols entering the musical theatre scene. On April 6, it was announced that Mamamoo’s Solar would be making her musical debut in ‘Mata Hari’. The Korean remake of the off-Broadway production returns after five years for its third run. And the new cast is as exciting as ever as it includes Solar, BTOB’s Changsub, FT Island’s Lee Hongki and Ock Joohyun of the iconic 1st-gen girl group Fin KL.

‘Mata Hari’ is based on the real-life of Dutch exotic dancer, Mata Hari who was also allegedly a double agent as she turned into a German spy and was executed by the French during World War I. Joohyun returns for the third time as Mata Hari following the musical’s first and second season in South Korea. The female protagonist will also be played by Mamamoo’s Solar. The male lead, Armand who was played by the likes of VIXX’s Leo and 2AM’s Seulong previously will be played by BTOB’s Changsub for the 2022 version.

‘Mata Hari’ returns

The Korean version of the play will focus on the tragic love story of Mata Hari and Armand, the only man who knows about her other secret life. Changsub, Hongki and musical actor Kim Sung-sik will play Armand. Movie actor Choi Min-cheol and singer Kim Paul have been cast as Colonel Ladoux, the French colonel who hires Mata Hari as a spy. The musical was an instant hit in 2016 as it was the most-watched play for 3 months in a row. Expectations are high as the third season of the musical goes deeper into the historical background and includes a new song.

'Really is the moment'

‘Mata Hari’ is set to have its opening night on May 28 at the Charlotte Theatre in Seoul. Mamamoo and BTOB fans are excited as the two groups debuted around the same time and are friends with each other. One fan tweeted, “91' liner really bring their bestie title to another level. I'm looking forward to see their dynamic as musical actors next. Solar is definitely in a good hands as Changsub will take care and guide her.” One fan joked, “If solar and changsub are each other’s love interests I will laugh so hard just imagining the two of them being awkward af about it.”

Another commented, “Solar debuting in a lead role for the mata hari musical she really is the moment.” One shared, “MUSICAL ACTOR LEE CHANGSUB IS BACK!!” Another said, “DAMN hot besties.” One was excited for the romantic scenes in the musical, “Mata and armand (2016) YOU MEAN TO SAY SOLAR AND CHANGSUB.” Another added, “At this point who and what is stopping Kdrama directors from casting Lee Changsub as male lead?” One was happy for Solar, “Solar's musical dreams coming true.”
