'Madam Secretary' Season 6 Episode 7 addresses whether the US is 'ready for a woman president' as Elizabeth faces impeachment

Considering this is the last season, do the writers really have to put Liz through all this? She has proven herself enough!

This article contains spoilers for season 6, episode 7.

In tonight's episode of 'Madam Secretary' things do not turn out smooth for the newly elected Madam President - Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni.) With the FBI hounding her son's place and the ruler of Iran refusing to act on Liz's extradition demands, it is also as if the entire world is conspiring against Liz purely because she is the first female US president in the show's fictional world. And as Leoni asks in her POTUS avatar, it really makes one wonder if the world at all is ready for a woman to take charge as the leader of one of the most powerful nations of the world.

On season 6's episode 7, "When U.S. intelligence locates the mastermind behind a foreign country’s hack, Elizabeth must decide whether to risk war by extracting him from the country while she also prepares for the White House correspondents’ dinner." In simpler terms, as Liz has finally been able to track down the journalist who leaked incriminating information on her presidential election, under Russell's guidance, she reaches out to the president of Iran asking him to turn over his people. The president refuses, as expected, and instead threatens Liz with 48 hours for her to take back her extradition demands, or else he'll target the US.

But while Liz is considering breaching sovereignty after Iran's repeated targets to wreak havoc, she is informed that back home, a whole other war of corruption is brewing. Liz learns that Senator Hanson might consider canning the investigation into her election, but the price she will have to pay is push a few bills forward. When Liz refuses to indulge, Hanson calls a press conference the next day and accuses Liz and her office of severe wrongdoings, such as covering up of murder, acts of treachery, all the information derived from Blake's files and imminently calls for her impeachment.

The timing is insane as just the previous night, Liz came clean to her husband about the immense pressure and scrutiny she is being subjected to all because of her gender. The incessant, harrowing crises storming in one after the other is a clear indication of how not ready the world she lives in, is for a female president. But despite her world crumbling down Liz continuous to maintain her composure and go about her duties as scheduled for the day - something that has managed to garner fans' adoration as always.

Taking to Twitter, a fan shared: "I know I won't be having children but if I had, I would show my daughter this show as an example of what women are capable of and a tremendous role model." Another chimed in, tweeting "What an end to tonight's #MadamSecretary. It was so real that I'm now fully prepared & expecting to see the bad guy get away with his twisted lies (b/c the bad guys have been doing that for the past 3 years in real life). Didn't know my faith in humanity was so far gone already." But considering this is the last season, do the writers really have to put Liz through all this? She has proven herself enough, believes a fan, who shared "It's bad enough this is the last season do they REALLY have to go after her like this. It's ridiculous ENOUGH already! Why do the bad guys ALWAYS win?"

'Madam Secretary' season 6 airs on Sundays at 10 pm only on CBS.
