'Left me in shambles': Fans tear up over Ellie and Sam's friendship in 'The Last of Us' Episode 5

Episode 5 of 'The Last of Us', 'Endure and Survive', saw Sam and Ellie forming a bond, only for the boy to die later on after getting infected

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: HBO Max's original 'The Last of Us' is winning hearts across the globe as each episode seems to give fans a reason to rejoice and cry. After a painful Episode 3 and a glimmer of hope in Episode 4, Episode 5 has left fans in tears. While Episode 4 provided a much deeper insight into Joel and Ellie's bond, by the end of the episode, we saw the duo held at gunpoint by two people.

Episode 5, titled 'Endure and Survive' sees Lamar Johnson as Henry and Keivonn Woodard as Sam, who were the ones holding Ellie and Joel at the gunpoint. 'The Last of Us' is a live-action adaptation of the popular video game of the same name and stars Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller and Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams.

Episode 5 provided some insight and also an opportunity for fans to reach for the tissues as it showed Ellie being a child in the post-apocalyptic world they were living in. Sam and Ellie were seen laughing, playing soccer, enjoying a comic book and trying to be regular children for a short while. Sam teaches Ellie how to say "endure and survive" in sign language. The moment where Ellie tries to use her blood to cure an infected Sam was a punch to the gut. Soon after, Sam turns, only tobe shot by his brother, Henry, who then shoots himself in shock.

'Left me in Shambles'

After this gut-wrenching episode, fans swamped the internet with their reactions. A fan tweeted, "Ellie and Sam bruh this episode left me in shambles #tlou." Another fan recalled said, "#TheLastOfUsHBO the scene .....sam and ellie laughing together .... "haven't heard that in awhile"....." Yet another fan added, "Ellie and sam’s relationship was so pure, fun and precious they just needed someone to be friends with." A fan pointed to the final moments of the episode and added, "#TheLastOfUs #TheLastOfUsHBO Ellie and Sam nooooo."

The one scene that left fans devastated was probably the one where Ellie tries to cure Sam. A fan tweeted, "#TheLastOfUs spoilers - - - - - ellie cutting her hand open and trying to heal sam’s bite with her blood i cannot do this". Another chimed in, "#thelastofus SPOILERS - - - - - - - - - oh my oh my… when ellie shared her blood with sam, hoping that he’s not infected. and sam telling ellie to stay awake with him so he wouldn’t be alone when he turned…… this is breaking my heart once again." Another fan commented, "NO NO NO NO NOOOOO SAM SHOWED HER THE BITE AND ELLIE TRIED TO SAVE HIM THEY MADE THIS 100 TIMES WORSE #TheLastOfUs #TheLastOfUsHBO." Another heartbroken fan chimed in, "Of course Sam would trust Ellie enough to tell her he got infected and his d3ath that for sure is another reason for her to keep her journey #TheLastOfUs".

The first five episodes of 'The Last of Us' is now streaming exclusively on HBO Max. Episode 6 will premiere on February 19.
