Summer is coming to a close meaning 'tis the time to prepare for the holiday season and upcoming romantic comedy 'Last Christmas' is set to bring the Christmas cheer. Starring 'Game of Thrones' star Emilia Clarke and 'Crazy Rich Asians' actor Henry Golding, 'Last Christmas' is already sparking many theories from viewers as to the fate of its lead characters. The movie, named after the song by George Michael's English pop duo Wham!, will also feature previously unreleased music from the late singer.
Release Date
The movie is set to release on November 8, 2019.
Plot
In the trailer, Emilia Clarke's Kate is a down-on-luck cynical woman who works as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. She runs into Henry Golding's Tom repeatedly and over time, he helps her find her Christmas spirit again. Kate opens up to Tom about being nearly sick and dying which led to her being the cynical 'mess' that she is. Through the trailer, we see Kate growing closer to her family, volunteering at the homeless shelter, and falling for Tom.
The trailer has led many viewers to speculate that Golding's character Tom is a ghost as only Kate seems to interact with him throughout the trailer, coupled with the fact that we see Tom mostly in the same outfit. Emilia Clarke as Kate also exclaims that he keeps disappearing and that she always bumps into him accidentally.
In an interview with RadioTimes, Emma Thompson, who wrote the script with Bryony Kimmings, said that the movie was "based on the song 'Last Christmas' by Wham!. She developed the idea with her husband, Greg Wise, and with the late singer George Michael, before his passing."
Additionally, since the lyrics of the eponymous song goes "Last Christmas, I gave you my heart", fans are theorizing that Tom is a ghost, whose heart was transplanted into Kate when she was sick and "nearly died".
