Katy Perry dons Adam Lambert cape on 'American Idol', fans say 'he would be a better judge'

BRENTWOOD, CALIFORNIA: ABC's 'American Idol' 2023 continued with the Top 10 singers on Sunday, April 30. After America's votes are counted, two of the Top 12 were eliminated, and the singers also had a celebrity mentor in the form of Adam Lambert.

Adam was in the eighth season of 'American Idol' in 2009. He came in second place in the music competition, with Kris Allen taking first place. Adam played Charlie in the film 'Fairyland,' which was released on January 20, 2023. He has been performing with Queen + Adam Lambert since 2011, which involves himself and the active members of the legendary British band Queen. The collaborators earned success on a 66-date global tour in 2014.

During Sunday's episode of 'American Idol,' Katy Perry wore the famous Adam Lambert cape. Katy wore an Elvis-style cloak with "Adam Lambert" stitched on the back during a 2009 performance of "Waking Up in Vegas." Kris Allen supporters were furious as Katy's cape on 'American Idol' revealed more than her eccentric flair, with the design providing Adam an advantage in the competition.

However, Kris was quickly declared the winner, and Adam went on to achieve great success in his own right. However, when Katy reintroduced the cape on the April 30 episode of the show, Adam couldn't help but repost Katy's post on his stories.

Katy in the caption of her post wrote, "Fun fact: In 2009 I performed Waking Up In Vegas on #idol when @adamlambert was a finalist. At the end of the song I revealed this cape (and maybe got in a little trouble for playing favorites... well I pulled it out of storage and dusted her off especially for this rock show tonight."

Adam 'owes' his career to 'American Idol'

During the Sunday episode, Ryan Seacrest asked why he returned to the 'American Idol' stage and Adam said he 'owes' the show for launching his career. "If it weren't for Idol, I wouldn't be here with you right now, and I wouldn't be touring the world," Adam explains. "It launched everything for me."

This week, Adam, the international sensation of 'American Idol', assisted in mentoring the contestants. Adam asked Tyson Venegas to cover Stevie Wonder, and Tyson chose 'For Once in My Life'. Adam made a wise recommendation because it perfectly matched Tyson's voice range. Before taking the stage, Adam tutored recently engaged participant Warren Peay on storytelling. Haven Maddison was urged by Adam to let her technique "go a little bit" and let go.

Lucy Love, according to Adam, overthinks everything. He encouraged her to simply smile and enjoy herself. That is exactly what she did for her performance. Ray Charles' famous 'Georgia on My Mind' was performed by Oliver Steele. Adam thought it was a fantastic song, but Oliver bored him. He informed the vocalist that the song needed to go somewhere, and he needed to give it a journey. Marybeth Byrd had picked ABBA's 'Dancing Queen' for her performance. She was looking forward to putting her own country spin on it, and Adam applauded her musical selections and assured Marybeth she had no cause to doubt herself.

After performing Tina Turner's 'I Can't Stand the Rain,' Adam went on to coach the rest of the group. Nutsa had a lot to show after almost being ousted last week. She had the ideal mentor for Queen's 'The Show Must Go On'. Adam suggested that she tone things down with another song – she kept the song, but tried to accept his suggestion by singing "more angelic notes."

Megan Danielle sang 'Angel From Montgomery' by Bonnie Raitt, a song she is familiar with. Adam advised her to take it easy and "take it to church." He believed she possessed that elusive quality and was "the reason why this show works." Megan followed Adam's instruction and kept the song at Bonnie's original speed, adding her raspy, soulful vocals. 'Don't Bring Me Down,' by Electric Light Orchestra, was performed by Zachariah Smith. Adam remarked Zachariah sounded "dope" and encouraged him to smile and enjoy his performance.

'He would be a better judge than the three we have'

Seeing Adam help the contestants, made fans tweet, "Seriously, @AdamLambert was the best mentor I have ever seen on #AmericanIdol or even #TheVoice for that matter. He really knows what he is doing. He needs to be a judge. Tonight's #Idol blew me away. All the singers were so talented and Adam showed them how to bring their A game." Another chimed in, "Best mentor ever has been @adamlambert Make him a judge!"

On Reddit, fans seemed disappointed to see Adam giving better criticism than the existing judges, "Adam is the only person being honest with these people." One person while agreeing, wrote, "he would be a better judge than the three we have." One fan advised, "They should bring Adam back as a guest judge next season." Others agreed, "He would be a fabulous judge!"

While throwing shade at the current judging panel, one wrote, "Is there any way Adam could be a full time AI judge in the future? I think he could maybe bring back some of the honesty." One also added, "Did Adam Lambert save the season lol with some good coaching gollllly everyone sounds brand new."

'American Idol' Season 21 airs every Sunday and Monday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
