Why did Kate Middleton make Meghan Markle cry? Here's how royal family covered up 'real character assassination'
In their first interview since they ended their royal duties in January last year, Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah Winfrey for an exclusive interview airing on CBS this Sunday, where the duo talked about their time in the royal family.
The interview revealed many things, including a secret wedding and discussions surrounding how dark their son Archie's skin color would be. Interestingly, it also brought out a probably long-forgotten incident about Meghan making sister-in-law Kate Middleton cry over a dress for Princess Charlotte. But Meghan revealed that it was, in fact, the other way round. “The reverse happened", Meghan said, during the interview that could “vastly” damage the monarchy. "That was a turning point."

Why did Kate Middleton make Meghan Markle cry?
Rumors of a rift between the duchesses swirled in 2018 after royal sources revealed emotional Kate ended up weeping following the incident of a "stressful" dress fitting — just weeks before Meghan married Prince Harry. “A few days before the wedding she (Kate) was upset about something, pertaining to yes the issue was correct about the flower girl dresses, and it made me cry. And it really hurt my feelings,” Meghan said.
Princess Charlotte, then three, had been trying on her outfit just weeks before Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry, during which time the 37-year-old bride-to-be was understood to have insisted on "the very best" for her big day — but the fitting did not go according to her demands. The "stressful" fitting thus, according to the Sun, had left Kate "shaken and in tears". The Daily Telegraph quoted an insider as saying: “Kate had only just given birth to her third child, Prince Louis, and was feeling quite –emotional.”
'I went into it naively'
Oprah asked Markle about the incident, which was thoroughly reported in the British tabloids, but she responded by saying the situation was actually the reverse. According to Meghan, Kate was the one who made Meghan cry about flower girl dresses, following which the Duchess of Cambridge apologized and brought her flowers and a note. “I will say I went into it naively because I didn’t grow up knowing much about the royal family,” Meghan said.
However, the tabloid rumors created some of many unfavorable headlines toward Meghan that she says were constructed to fit into a polarizing narrative of a "hero and a villain". Royal aides did not deny the incident had taken place, amid claims that the duchesses were “very different people”, according to The Sun.
'Character assassination'
While Meghan refused to speak unfairly about Kate, since she said she has forgiven her, she made it a point to acknowledge that everyone in the royal family knew the true story and chose not to tell it. She said that after the Australia tour, she realized the institution wasn’t protecting her and called the dress fitting incident "the beginning of a real character assassination".
Harry and Meghan have moved with their son Archie to California, where they announced earlier this year that Meghan is pregnant with their second child. The couple has also signed production deals while vowing to continue living a life of public service as private citizens.
