M Night Shyamalan’s ‘Remain’ gets a new release date and Warner Bros is betting big on this risky move
M. Night Shyamalan is returning to theaters with a love story that doesn’t play by soft-focus rules, and now it finally has a release date circled in red ink. ‘Remain’ is set to arrive on the big screen on February 5, 2027, as reported by Variety. Interestingly, it wasn’t always meant for this date. The movie was initially lined up for an October 2026 debut. This project is unusual before you even get to the plot. The film and the book were born side by side, not one chasing the other. Shyamalan wrote the screenplay while Nicholas Sparks crafted a novel, both working from the same original romantic idea but taking separate creative paths.
Sparks’ book landed first, hitting shelves in October 2025. Now the cinematic version is getting ready to step into the spotlight. At the center of the story is Jake Gyllenhaal, playing a New York architect Tate, whose life has cracked wide open. His character arrives in Cape Cod after time spent in a high-end psychiatric facility, following the loss of his sister. She had an unusual gift. She could see spirits. And that ability, it turns out, runs in the bloodline, whether anyone wants it or not. Cape Cod is meant to be a reset. Fresh air, long walks, fewer ghosts, literal or otherwise. That plan doesn’t last very long. Enter Wren, played by ‘Bridgerton’ standout Phoebe Dynevor.
Her charm comes with complications she keeps carefully tucked away. The connection between Tate and Wren grows quickly, but it’s never simple, and it never feels safe. Her life is tangled with secrets, the kind that don’t stay hidden for long, and as they get closer to each other, the stakes rise in ways neither of them expects. There is romance here, yes. Also tension. Urgency. The sense that time is pressing in from all sides. Tate realizes that helping Wren means confronting truths she’s spent years avoiding, and doing it before circumstances close in completely. The supporting cast fills out the world around them.
Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare, and Maria Dizzia all appear, forming a circle of side characters. Warner Bros. is handling the release and chose early February with intention. The studio has been closely watching audience behavior, especially around romantic titles, and the numbers are encouraging. With strong advance interest already seen for this year’s Valentine’s-themed ‘Wuthering Heights’, executives believe February is no longer a dumping ground for films that don’t fit elsewhere. It’s becoming a sweet spot. There’s also plenty of internal confidence around ‘Remain’.
According to Deadline, the film has earned the strongest test screening reactions of Shyamalan’s career. That is no small statement considering his past includes ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘Unbreakable’. That doesn’t mean the path will be empty. ‘Remain’ opens against a varied slate. Universal is releasing an as-yet-untitled Judd Apatow comedy starring Glen Powell, aiming at a crowd looking for laughs. Disney is also stepping into the same weekend with ‘Ice Age: Boiling Point’, a clear pick for families. The weekend after, moviegoers will see the release of ‘Nightingale’, a historical drama featuring Elle Fanning and Dakota Fanning, alongside an untitled K-pop related project.
