Jake Gyllenhaal returns for 'Road House 2,' against a six-time WWE champion and we can't wait for the chaos
Almost two years after the release of Jake Gyllenhaal's 'Road House' movie remake on Prime Video, the sequel film is almost around the corner. The 2024 film featured Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton, a washed-up former middleweight UFC fighter. Following a fiasco in the ring, Dalton is forced to let go of his UFC career and takes up a job as a bouncer cum security enforcer at an unruly roadhouse in the Florida Keys. It also featured several well-known UFC figures, including Conor McGregor, who appeared as the formidable villain Knox.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Collider, 'Road House 2' producer Charles Roven shared some interesting details about what to expect from the upcoming sequel movie. He confirmed that the film's production was nearing completion. Roven also admitted that the sequel will present an intimate character study of Dalton, detailing the circumstances that brought him to where he is: "I think what’s going to happen is this movie is going to be more emotional because you’re going to understand some of the history. We are going to let people understand why he was the character that he was in the first Road House."
The producer further added, "Now, I didn’t produce the first Road House. Other people produced it. We have a different director. We have a lot more very famous MMA and UFC fighters in the movie, but there’s also a really great emotional story that you discover as the movie goes on that the first movie just didn’t deal with." Moving on, Roven also revealed that production was running its course over the last ten days of the schedule, suggesting that the post-production phase would commence shortly. He then opened up about the potential release date, "I think it’s out later this year or the beginning of next, it hasn’t been dated, and it’s only on Amazon Prime."
ScreenRant further reports that, in keeping with the pattern set by the 2024 movie, which included McGregor, UFC President Dana White, and UFC announcers Jon Anik and Bruce Buffer, the upcoming sequel will feature ex-WWE fighter and actor Dave Bautista opposite Gyllenhaal. The rest of the cast includes Michael 'Venom' Page, Leila George, Michael Chandler, Stephen Thompson, Dustin Poirier, Tyron Woodle, and Rico Verhoeven.
The history of the original 'Road House' movie has been quite a mixed bag. Despite being hailed as a cult classic today, the 1989 movie directed by Doug Liman didn't fare well at the box office and received multiple Razzie nominations, an annual awards ceremony honoring the year's worst films in several categories. Following this, a direct-to-video sequel was released in 2006, with Swayze passing the mantle to Johnathon Schaech, who played Dalton's son. 'Road House' is exclusively available on Prime Video.
