A Marvel star is set to join Robert Pattinson in 'The Batman Part II' and it could shake things up
From one superhero universe to another! Things are heating up for 'The Batman Part II,' as a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) star is set to join Robert Pattinson in the much-anticipated sequel. The follow-up to the 2022 movie, 'The Batman,' the sequel is slated for an October 1, 2027, release. While rumors have swirled about Scarlett Johansson joining the star cast of the follow-up, another MCU star and Oscar nominee is also speculated to be joining the sequel.
The star in discussion is Sebastian Stan, who, as per reports, is in talks to join 'The Batman Part II.' Known for playing Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier in the MCU, it's not yet clear whether he will be a friend or foe to Batman in the upcoming DC film, as per Variety. The highly anticipated sequel, directed by Matt Reeves, is set to start filming next spring. The first film, released in March 2022, reportedly earned $772 million worldwide.
'The Batman Part II,' written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, has also added Johansson to its star-studded cast, which includes Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Barry Keoghan, expected to reprise the Joker. Johansson and Stan previously worked together in Marvel's 'Avengers' films, while Stan and Pattinson co-starred in 'The Devil All the Time.' The sequel has been in development for some time, as Reeves aims to surpass the dark, critically acclaimed first film.
Although 'The Batman Part II' isn't officially part of the new DC Universe, it is being developed under James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios. The latest cinematic universe began with 'Superman,' which earned $615 million worldwide and will continue with 'Supergirl' (June 26, 2026), 'Clayface' (September 2026), the Superman sequel 'Man of Tomorrow' (July 2027), and a new 'Wonder Woman' film in development. Regarding Stan's previous work in the world of comic book films, the actor portrayed Bucky Barnes for over a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Deadline.
Stan, who received Golden Globe attention and festival praise, will be ready to repeat the role of Bucky Barnes in Marvel Studios' next film, 'Thunderbolts'. Furthermore, he has also demonstrated his versatility, earning critical acclaim for his portrayal of Donald Trump in 'The Apprentice', a performance that garnered significant award buzz.
