'Supergirl' trailer introduces DC faithful to cheeky, but incredibly powerful Kara Zor-El
DC Studios introduced Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El in the 'Superman', giving a glimpse of the much-awaited character. Now, the 'Game of Thrones' star returns in the iconic blue outfit in her own funny and fantastic 'Supergirl' trailer. Oh, and there's a quick sneak peek at Jason Momoa's Lobo.
The clip sees a hungover Kara waking up in her messy apartment to Krypto, copiously urinating on a copy of The Daily Planet. What's funny is that he pees on a picture of Kara's cousin, Clark Kent/Superman (David Corenswet). This is followed by the superhero picked up by a spaceship, where she's seen getting drunk in an alien bar to celebrate her 23rd birthday. There's also a quick look at her home planet, Krypton's destruction, which she witnesses. The trailer also showcases her abilities as he takes on a bunch of bad guys, while Momoa's blink-and-miss Lobo will surely cause intrigue among DC fans.
Earlier, director Craig Gillespie shed light on what to expect from the film. "They are so different in tone,” Gillespie said, per IGN. "And to be able to really lean into it and embrace it… and… are we allowed to say this? The whole movie takes place in outer space." This was seconded by DC head honcho, James Gunn: "The outer space thing's a big part of it because it is a space fantasy."
"I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman," Gunn added. "A much more difficult background. He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents who loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin."
"In our story, we have Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents," Gunn detailed. "Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet, and she lived there for the first 14 years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f***ed up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far." Clearly, there's more to Kara than meets the eye. Gunn's comments suggest that the character's backstory will be explored in the film, and it remains to be seen how different it is when compared to the TV series starring Melissa Benoist.
'Supergirl' releases June 26, 2026, in theatres.
