Is Richard Roper really alive? ‘The Night Manager’ Season 2 drops a huge twist but it doesn’t quite land
Even though the debut season of 'The Night Manager' aired on Amazon Prime Video a decade ago, fanfare surrounding the popular espionage thriller has been consistently on the rise. With the recent premiere of the show's sophomore season, the John le Carré adaptation had a tall order to fulfil. Three episodes have been made available for streaming, and more are on the way. 'The Night Manager' season two has once again raised the stakes for Tom Hiddleston's Jonathan Pine as he's forced to confront a formidable foe from his past.
The third episode of 'The Night Manager' dropped on January 11, 2026, and featured Hugh Laurie's Roper making an unexpected comeback. At the end of Season 1, Roper was abducted by the Syrian forces and was assumed dead until the Episode 3 twist. The sophomore season showed Olivia Colman's Angela Burr, representing the Foreign Office's International Enforcement Agency, identifying Roper's body alongside Pine. The latter is now formally known by the alias Alex Goodwin and has been tasked with heading The Night Owls, a surveillance unit. This proves to be a dangerous task, as explained by The Gold Derby, and by the end of the first episode, the majority of Pine's team have been killed in action, with Pine himself threatened by a major explosion.
Entertainment Daily and other outlets reported that Jonathan Pine's mission in the second season led him to investigate the operations of a Colombian criminal figure named Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva). To continue his investigation, Pine adopted a false identity as a businessman to learn about Dos Santos' activities and discover his meeting with Gilberto Hanson. Furthermore, Hanson is revealed to be Richard Roper, alive and disguised, after he was presumed dead. This also led to some of the audience to think that there is a connection between Dos Santos and Roper's past, however, this has not been confirmed.
Roper was depicted as one of the most dangerous men on earth on the Prime Video show's debut season. The mere fact that he's an international arms dealer establishes him as quite a menace. When coupled with the fact that he has no conscience or remorse for his actions, his resurgence appears immensely sinister. Judging by the way things are proceeding on the sophomore season, it seems to be just a matter of time before Pine is left with no recourse but to confront his arch nemesis.
Hiddleston recently spoke at length about his experience of working on the second season. When asked about the moment when Pine discovers for the first time that Roper is not dead, the 'Loki' star commented, "It was such an extraordinary moment, actually. It was at a location just outside Medellin in Colombia, and it was one of those scenarios where it was the very last shot of the day." Hiddleston further added, "I remember thinking, 'It's been 10 years, and Pine has been living as though the dragon has been slain with that relief and to hear the dragon's voice again would create such extraordinary shock.' I kept thinking about the cortisol and the adrenaline that would just flood your system, the confusion, the kind of nightmarish 'Can I believe what I'm seeing?' It was an extraordinary moment to play and one that we didn't do very many times." All episodes of 'The Night Manager' are available for streaming on Prime Video.
