'Winning 7 Oscars is RIDICULOUS': Internet slams EEAAO as the most overrated film of the year
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ dominated the 2023 Oscars by winning seven awards at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress, Ke Huy Quan was named Best Supporting Actor, and Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan bagged Best Director for filmmakers. It became the most-awarded best film since 2008's 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
Accepting the respective awards, Vietnam-born actor Quan said tearfully, as stated by The Guardian, "Mom, I just won an Oscar! They say stories like this only happen in the movies, I cannot believe this is happening to me.” While director Kwan expressed, "We’ve said enough tonight. I just want to say thank you for everyone here. You’ve all inspired me. I think one of the things that I realized growing up is that one of the best things we can do for each other is shelter each other from the chaos of this crazy world we live in. Thank you to the storytellers here who did that for me. The world is changing rapidly, and I fear that our stories are not keeping at pace. Sometimes it’s a little scary knowing that movies move at the rate of years and the world on the internet is moving at the rate of milliseconds. But I have great faith in our stories. These stories have changed my life, and they’ve done that for generations. I know that we’ll get through this," reports Deadline. However, the internet was quick to react by calling the film, which received a total of 11 Oscar nominations, more than any film this year, "overrated."

'EEAAO winning 7 Oscars is RIDICULOUS'
One wrote, "EEAAO is severely overrated." While another tweeted, "#EEAAO is the most overrated movie in Academy history, without question. I’m embarrassed for all the people who think anointing it as some good movie somehow does something for them. The Academy has jumped the shark."

Many were left upset after Steven Spielberg's 'The Fabelmans' didn't grab the award. A fan wrote, "EEAAO was pure Oscar bait. Same with Tar. Both overrated films. EEAAO winning 7 Oscars is RIDICULOUS…. The academy should give Spielberg a formal apology for disrespecting him tonight." An individual commented, "There were so many interesting candidates for best picture at the #Oscars tonight: moving intimate stories and a blockbuster which encapsulates everything the big screen is about (#TopGunMaverick). Sorry, but for me EEAAO is overrated, except for the actors."

'Let the Asian community have their moment'
On the other hand, a fan defended by saying, 'Not even 24 hours after it’s win, I’m already seeing the chorus of people saying EEAAO didn’t deserve the gold. Please, let the people who have been rooting for this movie for the last 12 months have their moment. And more importantly, let the Asian community have their moment." One more said, "EEAAO got me to pay $20 for a single movie, which I have not done since 2019. It was worth it." While an individual wrote, "It’s art. It’s subjective. Why does there have to be some kind of big conspiracy when things don’t work out the way you think they should? EEAAO is the darling movie of the year. Marvel movies are popcorn flicks. Art vs. Popcorn flick there is your answer."

Snehal Desai, artistic director of East West Players, the largest and longest-running Asian-American theater, expressed, as per Roger Ebert, "This recent recognition is great, much appreciated and long overdue. These are artists who have been doing this work for decades. We are glad for the visibility and recognition, but it really should not have taken this long."
