How much does 'The Traitors' mansion cost? McTaggart family owns multimillion-dollar sprawling castle in Scottish Highlands
ROSSHIRE, SCOTLAND: Sir Alexander Matheson, an MP and opium trader, acquired the estate, where both 'The Traitors' UK and US were filmed, for £90,000 in 1845, equivalent to £13.49 million today ($17.41 million USD).
He enlisted architect Alexander Ross to redesign the castle in the Scots Baronial style, adding around 30 rooms to the existing mansion. The estate, initially developed in the late 1700s by the 1st Duke of Sutherland, featured a hunting lodge in 'The Mansion'.
The restoration and expansion, costing £7,000, included enhancements to the lawns, pond, and fountain. Presently, the castle is available for weddings, offering a two-night experience for up to 130 guests, with prices starting at £45,000.
The McTaggart family acquired Ardross Castle in 1983 and continues to be its proud owners to this day. Although it isn't operated as a hotel, the castle has become a sought-after wedding venue.
Its prominence as a setting in 'The Traitors' the game show featuring celebrities immersed in a psychological competition, has undoubtedly contributed to its popularity. In the show, Ardross Castle emerges as the real star, providing a captivating backdrop for the unfolding events of the competition.
What is 'The Traitors' all about?
Contestants on 'The Traitors' arrive at a castle in the Scottish Highlands, eager to compete for a substantial cash prize accumulated through various missions. Season 1 featured 20 contestants, while Season 2 expanded to 22 participants.
In the show, 22 strangers engage in a series of missions, vying for the chance to win £120K. However, hidden among the players are the 'Traitors', who clandestinely convene to decide which of their fellow players, known as 'Faithfuls', should be eliminated from the competition.
Interestingly, despite the grandeur of the castle setting, rumors suggest that contestants may not actually stay there during filming. The true accommodations remain a well-kept secret, with producers maintaining secrecy. Speculations hint at contestants possibly lodging in a hotel near the airport.
