'General Hospital' revisits Luke Spencer's legacy in special episode honoring Anthony Geary
'General Hospital' has been among the longest-running daily soap operas on television. A show with such a vast expanse of running time often owes credit to a handful of stars with enduring popularity who catapult the show to new heights of fame with every successive season. For 'General Hospital', the late Anthony Geary was undoubtedly one of them. Appearing as Luke Spencer on 'General Hospital' for almost four decades, Geary's name had come to be nearly synonymous with the ABC soap opera. Therefore, when the veteran actor passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025, it was only fair that the network would honour his legacy by airing a special Luke Spencer episode.
Just Jared reports that Geary succumbed to complications resulting from a surgical procedure. The news of his demise was first expressed by his husband, Claudio Gama, who revealed that the actor passed away in the Netherlands, where he had been staying for the last couple of years. He was seventy-eight years old. Following Geary's demise, ABC announced that the episode featuring Luke's last appearance on 'General Hospital', one that originally aired on July 27, 2015, would be aired as a special on January 1, 2026.
Entertainment Weekly further explained that the episode features Luke bidding farewell to Port Charles, the seat of all his action up to that point on the show. Following his departure, Luke was occasionally referenced as a background character until his on-screen demise on January 3, 2022, when his widow, Tracy Quartermaine, informed his long-time lover, Laura, that the anti-hero character had been killed in a car crash in Austria. The character of Luke is best remembered for bringing his street-smart hustler nature and his mob ties to 'General Hospital'. His character arc often saw him venturing into espionage-based storylines that featured overseas involvement. In the aftermath of his exit from the ABC show, Geary went on to live with his husband, Gama, in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The on-screen chemistry between Luke and Laura, played by Gene Francis, has been one for the history books. Although their relationship started on a controversial note, with Luke sexually assaulting Laura, the encounter was eventually rectified and written into the show as Luke seducing Laura, as per Variety. The couple was adored by soap opera audiences and their 1981 on-screen wedding raked in a whopping 30 million live viewers, a feat unmatched to this day!
Francis recently paid tribute to her co-star in a statement, which read, "He was a powerhouse as an actor. Shoulder to shoulder with the greats. No star burned brighter than Tony Geary. He was one of a kind. As an artist, he was filled with a passion for the truth, no matter how blunt or even a little rude it might be, but always hilariously funny." 'General Hospital' episodes are available for streaming on Hulu.
