LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year and all the footage that has been shown to us till now has only made us more excited for it. The filmmaker was at this year’s CinemaCon with stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, to promote the upcoming movie and revealed that her long-time partner and director Noah Baumbach was so much into the writing process that he even thought of directing the film.

Noah Baumbach is known for writing and directing deeply personal films. His characters are often realistic and take viewers on a journey that is similar to their own lives. Although Baumbach would have been a great choice for directing a movie like ‘Barbie’, Gerwig didn’t want to let go of this opportunity to tell a story that she completely adored and told her long-time partner to “step aside.”

Gerwig told her long-time partner to "step aside"

While speaking about the writing process at the CinemaCon (via World Of Reel), the 39-year-old filmmaker noted she had a lot of fun while writing the screenplay with Baumbach, and things reached to a point where the ‘Marriage Story’ helmer thought of directing the upcoming film. However, Gerwig was so invested in the story that she didn’t want anyone else to make the movie.

“We were making each other laugh and then we got to the end and we started to make each other cry. He thought it was very good and was maybe wanting to direct it. And I said, ‘Step aside.’ There was a point I was so in love with it that I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing it,” Gerwig said.

New footage sees Barbie and Ken bringing in a lot of chaos

The filmmaker also shared some new footage from the movie that featured new characters and also gave more clarity on what actually is happening in the movie. The footage kicks off with Robbie’s Barbie living her best life in Barbie Land, waking up every morning to the same routine, and hanging out with her friends. However, the entire mood changes when Robbie’s Barbie asks if her fellow dolls have ever thought about death. From that moment, Robbie’s character starts experiencing side effects from her curiosity and it gets so bad that her heel-shaped feet begin to look “flat” like humans. We also get a glimpse of Will Farrell’s character who is the CEO of the company that invented all the dolls and runs Barbie Land in secrecy. He quickly discovers that two of their subjects have escaped and launches a full search mission.
