The awards season is here and fans are eagerly waiting for their favorite stars to get up on that stage and give emotional victory speeches as they get their hands on the beautiful trophies. The first major award ceremony to take place is always Golden Globes and this year, it’s no different. However, things have changed drastically since last year and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has taken a decision that was truly unexpected.

In a shocking turn of events, the HFPA has decided not to “live-stream” this year’s ceremony and the winner will be announced on their website. The organization also revealed that the names of the winners will be announced in real-time on its social media handles as well.

Golden Globes 2022: Hollywood Foreign Press Association murky backdrop could spell end of the awards

The announcement was made on the official Twitter handle of Golden Globes, which read, “This year's event is going to be a private event and will not be live-streamed. We will be providing real-time updates on winners on the Golden Globes website and our social media.”

As soon as the news surfaced online, people started to speculate as to why this happened. However, according to a report by Deadline, it seems that NBC had nothing to do with this decision and was not “standing in the HFPA’s way over the live stream”.

The decision of not live-streaming the event comes after it was announced that this year the ceremony will take place without a red carpet, and without celebrities, meaning no presenters and nominees. The only people attending Sunday’s ceremony will be selected members of the HFPA. But there are strict rules for them as well as they would need to show that they have received their vaccinations, including the booster shots. Also, they would have to present a negative RT-PCR Test before entering the venue.

NBC usually airs the Golden Globes every year, but the network decided not to telecast the event because of a controversy that happened last year which exposed the organization for its lack of diversity.

The network bluntly said that they won’t be broadcasting the Golden Globes this year and noted that HFPA needs to change its policies soon. NBC also stated that they are hopeful they will be “in a position to air the show in January 2023”.

As far as the nominations are concerned, Jane Campion’s ‘The Power of the Dog’ and Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Belfast’ dominated the list and received 7 nods each. On the Television side, it was HBO’s drama series ‘Succession’ that led the list with 5 noms, including Best Drama Series. Apple TV+ series ‘Ted Lasso’ was the field leader in the Comedy categories.

South Korean phenomenon ‘Squid Game’ also garnered multiple nominations and will be going up against the likes of ‘Succession’, ‘The Morning Show’ and ‘Post’ in the Best Television Series (Drama) category.

This year’s Golden Globes will be taking place on Sunday, January 9, 2022.
