After facing a delay of two months due to Covid-19, the 78th edition of Golden Globes, which honors the best in television and film, finally kicked off with much fanfare on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Comedians and best of pals Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosted the ceremony from two different locations, making it the first bicoastal ceremony in the show’s 78-year history.

Fey hosted the ceremony from New York City’s Rainbow Room while Poehler complied with hosting duties from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The viewers were eagerly waiting for the winner to be announced in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Supporting Role and it was Gillian Anderson who got her hands on the gorgeous-looking trophy for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the blockbuster hit TV series 'The Crown'.

The star edged over Helena Bonham Carter ('The Crown'), Julia Garner ('Ozark'), Annie Murphy ('Schitt's Creek') and Cynthia Nixon ('Ratched) to receive the award. 

In her Golden Globes speech, Anderson thanked 'The Crown' creator Peter Morgan for writing Thatcher for her, calling the former PM an “exquisitely multi-dimensional character against the odds”. Fans were really excited to see their favorite actress winning the accolade and said she deserved all the accolades for bringing Thatcher to life. One said: "Congratulations @GillianA and so well deserved. Your performance was absolutely brilliant! Xoxo."

Meanwhile, one of the fans applauded her for not thanking Thatcher after the win. The user noted: "Gillian Anderson not thanking Thatcher in her speech for winning an award playing her is iconic. Stay winning Gillian."  On the other hand, some people were shocked to hear Gillian's "sexy voice"  when she made her acceptance speech. "NO ONE DESERVES THIS MORE THAN GILLIAN ANDERSON NO ONE HAS WORKED HARDER ITA BEEN A LONG TIME COMING," another user said. A user shared: "The only good thing to come from Margaret Thatcher is Gillian Anderson being able to play her in The Crown and winning a Golden Globe for it."  
 



 



 



 



 



 

On the other hand, there were others who were surprised to hear her American accent during the speech. "Gillian Anderson picked her American accent for tonight, clearly,” one viewer tweeted. "It’s always thrilling to hear what accent Gillian Anderson is going to choose at any given moment," another user wrote. "I watched the full run of The X-Files, but after The Crown, Sex Education, &c, &c, I am at the point where I am legit surprised to hear Gillian Anderson speak in an American accent," another user noted. Another one wrote: "I’m just amazed that she did her entire acceptance speech in an American accent! I’m not even sure she was aware of it! @GillianA you ROCK!!"



 



 



 



 


The star-studded event began on February 28 at 8 pm ET and the pre-show was streamed live from the official Twitter account of @GoldenGlobes and on the website goldenglobes.com at 6:30 pm ET.
