The 78th Golden Globes are currently being handed out in a virtual event amid the coronavirus crisis. It is the first time in the show’s history that the ceremony is being hosted from two different locations with iconic duo Amy Poehler and Tina Fey coming together once again to entertain viewers with their impeccable comedy timing. One of the most competitive categories during the show was the Best Screenplay Award and it was Aaron Sorkin who won the award for writing the screenplay of 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Rylance, Eddie Redmayne and Jeremy Strong in pivotal roles. This is Sorkin's 3rd win in this category after 'The Social Network' and 'Steve Jobs'. He is now tied with Quentin Tarantino and Robert Bolt for the most victories in the category.

Other nominees in the category included Emerald Fennell ('Gpromising Young Woman'), Jack Fincher ('Mank), Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton ('The Father') and Chloe Zhao ('Nomadland').

Upon receiving the Golden Globe award from Cynthia Erivo, Sorkin celebrated fellow nominees Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell and Regina King for inspiring his daughter to pursue film. As his drama about the Civil Rights movement-era found praise among the audience of today, the director channeled Abbie Hoffman – portrayed by Baron Cohen in the Netflix film – to discuss the fatal attacks on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. “I don’t always agree with what the characters I write do or say, but Abbie said, ‘Democracy is not something you believe in or where you hang your hat, but it’s something you do. It’s something you participate. You stop doing it, democracy crumbles,” he recited. “I don’t need anymore evidence beyond what happened on January sixth to agree with this.”

His name started trending on social media after his victory at the Golden Globes. The fans were ecstatic about his victory and labeled him one of the greatest film writers of all-time. One wrote: "CONGRATULATIONS AARON SORKIN!! YOU DESERVE IT!! One of the most talented writers and directors of all time!"

Meanwhile, another user praised him for using Abbie Hoffman's words to describe the current political situation in the US and also noted that the HFPA should have attached the 'West Wing' theme to his acceptance speech. She said: "Aaron Sorkin reads a quote from Abbie Hoffman about actively preserving democracy - and ties in the January 6 insurrection. That deserved a West Wing soundtrack."

Meanwhile, another user said that this is "Aaron Sorkin's world and people are just living in it." "Congratulations to Aaron Sorkin on his Golden Globe-winning for Best Screenplay for The Trial of The Chicago Seven. This is a film we really needed. I’ve enjoyed it so much and I highly recommend it," said another one.

Another user said: "Congratulations to @AaronSorkin for winning the best screenplay for “The Trial of the Chicago 7” My family is so grateful for you and @SaschaBaronCohen." "I believe #AaronSorkin should have walked briskly through the halls of his house while accepting his #GoldenGlobes," another user added.
