'Gangnam Style' icon PSY to make comeback after 5 years, fans say: '2022 redeemed itself'
Before we got ‘Old Town Road’ and ‘Despacito’, we had ‘Gangnam Style’. People who didn’t even know about K-pop were jamming to the song, watching the music video, and recreating the signature dance move. Its singer, PSY went from being the eccentric K-pop singer that Koreans found endearing to a global icon. He broke several barriers and made history in many fields from being the first K-pop idol to attend the Met Gala to having the first YouTube video to ever reach 1 billion views.
PSY was dubbed as the ‘Viral Star of 2012’ and then went on to release several other fun singles in that period from ‘Gentleman’ to ‘Hangover’ featuring Snoop Dogg. His last piece of music was in 2017 before he decided to focus on launching his own K-pop label P Nation. He signed on artists who had fallen from grace or deserved a second chance like Jessi, Hyuna, and Dawn, who are now taking over South Korea for him. However, with K-pop falling into a lull for the past few months, PSY has decided to come back to the music scene and show the kids how it's done.

PSY to come back after 5 years
On April 12, PSY posted that he would finally be making a comeback and it has garnered an explosive response. Titled ‘PSY 9th’, it is the K-pop legend’s ninth album overall and he is set to release it on April 29 at 6 pm KST (4 am ET). He also released a trailer that included footage of his time promoting ‘Gangnam Style’ in 2013.
He had said, “I know a lot of you have high expectations for my next hit song. To be honest, I produced ‘Champion’ in 2002. And it took me exactly 10 years to produce a song that is more sensational than ‘Champion’. With the release of ‘Gangnam Style’ in 2012, I guess what I am trying to say is…Perhaps, the next time you’ll meet a song like ‘Gangnam Style’ may be in 2022.” And it looks like he has stayed true to his words. 2022 also marks the 10th anniversary of 'Gangnam Style'.
‘Ready for another hit’
PSY has ended up trending as fans made tweets like, “Gangnam Style effects to the world was Epic. Even the non-kpop fans were dancing to it. We need that kind of unity through music again. #PSY #Manifesting.” One fan posted, “A psy cb was not on my bingo card for this year but omg.” One fan shared, “Ready for another hit from the hand of PSY.”
Another commented, “NEW PSY MUSIC 2022 JUST REDEEMED ITSELF LET'S GOOOOOOO.” One fan joked, “Not psy making a comeback before blackpink.” Another added, “Say what you want about psy but this man is an ICON idc.” One tweeted, “I need psy to comeback so that he can make the biggest groups his backup dancers again.”
