Netflix has decided not to pick up the second season of 'First Kill,' a teen drama series executive produced by Emma Roberts. Based on a short story written by the horror writer VE Schwab, 'First Kill' followed two teenage girls who fall for one another but belong to warring families: one a dynasty of vampire hunters, the other a line of bloodsuckers.

'First Kill' leading cast includes Sarah Catherine Hook and Imani Lewis, Elizabeth Mitchell, Will Swenson, Aubion Wise, Jason Robert Moore, Gracie Dzienny, Dylan McNamara, Dominic Goodman, Phillip Mullings Jr, Jonas Dylan Allen, and Roberto Mendez. The series aired on Netflix was released on June 10, 2022, and was executive produced by Felicia D Henderson and Emma Roberts alongside Schwab and Karah Preiss for Belletrist Productions.

Why was 'First Kill' canceled?

According to reports, 'First Kill' cracked into the streamer's weekly Top 10 for English-language TV series with its first three days of release, ranking No 7 with 30.3M hours viewed. It peaked at No. 3 in its first week of release with 48.8M hours considered, only behind 'Stranger Things' Season 4 and 'Peaky Blinders' Season 6, and spent one more week in the Top 10 before falling off. The series quickly cleared 100M hours viewed in its first 28 days of release. However, it did not have the staying power of most Netflix hits, still did not meet thresholds for viewing and completing the episodes.

'Canceling First Kill is stupid’

Fans of the series are now reacting to the decision taken by NetFlix, A user stated, "the lgbt community was always asking for a lgbt show that is just about gay people doing something else rather than just dealing with homophobic shit or fetishization and that's literally first kill". Later, a user tweeted. "Cancelling First Kill is stupid. It’s a low budget show that did pretty well. I’m cancelling Netflix because of it. Why is it when a company loses money they target their products marketed to marginalized communities first? I suggest LGBT fans tired of this do the same".

One user said, "if you’re having a conversation about why First Kill was cancelled don’t forget to mention that Calliope is a darkskin black lesbian lead and nonblacks can deny all they want but Calliope being black especially darkskin plays a huge role its not just bc FK is a lesbian show". Another user also tweeted, "i didn’t even love the show all that much but sapphic shows deserve the same treatment as mlm shows when they both do incredibly well in numbers at launch". A fan also said, "First Kill deserved better than what Netflix offered it they never believed it would do as good as it did and that was apparent from the budget and lack of promo. They couldn’t accept the fact that this show OUT PERFORMED and went toe to toe with their top billed shows"

Another user stated, "netflix isnt homophobic, it's lesbohphobic, so if ur telling them to not cancel a show with lgbtq+ representatuon, dont worry they wont, but if u tell them to not cancel a show with a leading lesbian couple.........", A fan tweeted, "lesbians are really losing in 2022 huh? killing eve, the wilds, and now first kill 2022, amc, bbc, amazon, and netflix are homophobic CONFIRMED", A user also said, "netflix is homophobic i'm cancelling my subscription". Later a fan also said, "i mean i wouldn’t be surprised if the people at netflix are homophobic as they’ve repeatedly shown themselves to be racist and transphobic so why not add a few others to the pile?"
