'Stranger Things' is sparing no narrative expense throughout its fifth and final season. As one shocking twist piles up on the other, the conclusion of the first volume of episodes saw Noah Schnapp's Will Byers unleashing his own powers in the dramatic showdown against Vecna and the sinister forces from the Upside Down. As the second volume of episodes recently dropped on Netflix, fans of the show have been eagerly watching every moment in the hopes of seeing their favorite character arcs and narrative threads come to a close. For a while, it seemed as if the perilous search for Vecna, Holly, and the other captive children turned disastrous as Jonathan and Nancy's lives hung in the balance.

In the interest of providing a quick recap, Netflix Life reports that 'Stranger Things' Season 5 Volume 2 kicked off with Hopper and Eleven going away to raid the military lab where Kali is being held captive. On the other hand, Steve, Dustin, Jonathan, and Nancy are troubled by the wall in the Upside Down and seek to devise a way to dismantle it, thus ending the sinister forces once and for all. Their search takes them to the Hawkins lab, and Dustin compares the situation to one found in the film 'Return to Jedi'.

The group splits into two, and Nancy and Jonathan find themselves together again. They're looking for the generator that they believe is supplying power to a magic barrier that divides them from Holly and prevents the latter's rescue. The duo, however, is at a low point in their relationship, and their previous lifestyle choice of keeping secrets from each other finally seems to be taking a toll. As matters come to a head, Nancy veers off in another direction before Jonathan locates a strange door with a melted handle. Upon breaking down the door, they browse through more similarly melted zones in the lab before landing on the roof.

When Nancy points her flashlight above, the light bounces off, and the duo realizes that a barrier or a shield, an electrically charged sphere, is directly overhead. All hell breaks loose when Nancy fires her shotgun at the sphere, which takes a few moments to react with the secretion of black and red streams of energy. The impact of the gunshot resounds throughout the walls of the Upside Down, and a bizarre, white, malleable goo starts filling the room. Both Jonathan and Nancy are thrown off their feet and land on the floor.

Despite seemingly dying in the impact, both of them eventually survive to fight another day, keeping in mind that the impending series finale will feature the greatest battle ever. Speaking about this scene in particular, the Duffer Brothers shared their insights in an interview with Variety magazine. "We just wanted to put Jonathan and Nancy in a situation where they thought they were going to die—and, of course, don't. But the backstory is that when the exotic matter, or dark matter, is disturbed, it disrupts the environment around, in this case, the lab, causing it to melt." All episodes of 'Stranger Things' are exclusively available on Netflix.
