Steve or Jonathan? ‘Stranger Things 5’ just dropped a major clue about who Nancy will finally choose
As 'Stranger Things' barrels toward its endgame, saving Hawkins is clearly the top priority. But that hasn't stopped fans from obsessing over one burning question: Who will Nancy Wheeler choose in the long-running love triangle that has divided viewers for years? While the final season's first four episodes, now streaming on Netflix, focus heavily on the escalating battle against Vecna, Volume 1 does slip in one major breadcrumb about Nancy's romantic future. And it arrives in episode 3, courtesy of the series' most chaotic truth-teller: Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman).
The surprise twist reveals that Murray secretly helped Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) plan a proposal. In classic Murray fashion, he hid the engagement ring inside a John Coltrane cassette tape before passing it along, a covert operation that Jonathan clearly wasn't ready to act on. Nancy (Natalia Dyer), meanwhile, was recovering from the terrifying aftermath of a Demogorgon attack that left her parents hospitalized and resulted in her little sister being abducted. Popping the question during that emotional disaster zone understandably felt ill-timed. But Murray, ever the romantic strategist, insisted the opposite.
As quoted by TVLine, "The death of a loved one is the painful but necessary reminder that life is delicate, precious — that one must not take those around us for granted, that one must strengthen bonds," he told Jonathan. Murray further said, "Hell, man, the two of you were brought together by shared trauma in the first place. This is the stuff of fate, of destiny." Still, despite his pushy pep talk, the storyline drops the ring entirely after that scene. Once the fight for Hawkins intensifies, Jonathan and Nancy's relationship fades into the background, leaving fans without a clear sense of where the couple stands.
And that's exactly why many viewers aren't convinced a proposal is coming anytime soon. Their relationship has already shown signs of strain, and the looming threat of Vecna could further test whatever fragile connection remains. Meanwhile, Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), Nancy's former boyfriend and a fan-favorite contender, is still very present in her life, keeping the love triangle alive even if Nancy hasn't openly addressed her feelings. With only four episodes available so far out of the final season's eight, it's impossible to predict how things will shake out. Nancy could choose Jonathan. She could return to Steve.
Or, in true 'Stranger Things' fashion, she could end up choosing no one and charging into battle independently. The Duffer brothers are keeping their cards close for now. What is clear is the release plans for the rest of season 5. Netflix is rolling out 'Stranger Things' Season 5 in three holiday-timed volumes. Volume 1, containing Episodes 1–4, premiered on November 26. The next batch, Volume 2 with Episodes 5–7, will arrive on Christmas Day, December 25. The season will conclude with Volume 3, featuring the super-sized Episode 8 finale, which is set to drop on New Year's Eve, December 31.
