'Legends of Tomorrow' to resume genre-hopping with parodies of 'Friends', 'Star Trek', zombie horror and more

The show will be parodying a whole slew of popular film and television genres in the second half of the season

When Season 5 of 'DC's Legends of Tomorrow' began, the show used its Encores to explore not just a villain-of-the-week format but parody or homage a genre-of-the-week as well. We saw documentary style-episodes, 90s cop flicks and slasher horror, to name a few. The introduction of the Loom of Fate brought up by John Constantine's (Matt Ryan) arc, seemed to be interrupting that but the trailer announcing the season's return shows that 'Legends of Tomorrow' is going to be picking right up from where it left off.

The action-packed trailer begins with an overt parody of 'Star Trek,' complete with Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) and Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) in full 'Star Trek' uniforms. The trailer even goes as far as to show the other Legends in Klingon makeup. It would appear that having control over the Loom of Fate has made manipulations of history, even more wackier as upcoming episodes feature a variety of different parodied genres.

A return to high school shenanigans sees the Legends take on 'Freaks and Geeks' with Nate Heywood (Nick Zano) finding himself quite comfortable living his best frat boy life. One notable moment features Nate and Behrad Tarazi (Shayan Sobhian) in a very familiar set - our first look at the 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S' parody for the upcoming 'The One Where We're Trapped On TV' episode, complete with a laugh track. It's implied that 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S' might not be the only show to be parodied that episode, however, as a shot of Sara as a cop on television seems to indicate that the Legends will be on multiple kinds of television shows, bringing their genre-hopping to a head by cramming in as many different kinds of parodies into a single episode as possible.

The trailer takes a darker turn, however, as the Fates loom large. Our first shots of 'I am Legends' sees the show take on zombie horror and it appears that it might just be this season's most grim episode yet, pushing the team to their limits.
