It is university festival season in South Korea and fans are excited as they get to see their favorite artists perform on their campus. We have had the likes of PSY, Hyuna, (G)I-DLE, Winner, BIBI and aespa perform at these festivals. Fans from outside the campus, the streets and neighboring buildings went viral for dancing to PSY’s ‘That That’ while he performed at the university festivals making everyone nostalgic for the ‘Gangnam Style’ craze back in 2012. The ‘Viral King’ is set to perform at another university, the Daejin University Festival, whose organizers have been slammed for their treatment of Cignature.

Cignature is a rookie girl group that debuted in 2020 under C9 Entertainment, home to artists like Cheetah, GroovyRoom, CIX and Epex. While Cignature is still new to the K-pop industry, they are gradually rising, from charting on Gaon Charts to crossing 3 million YouTube videos for their comeback ‘Arisong’ in 2 days. Well, along with the likes of PSY and Punch, who is known for her iconic OSTs, Cignature was invited to the Daejin University Festival on May 31. After some confusion among the students and the organizers, the university released a statement explaining that they invited Cignature because it was free.

Daejin Univeristy Festival under fire for rude comment about Cignature

The students created an uproar as they thought that their student union money was spent on a less popular K-pop group for the festival. But Daejin University Festival released a statement sharing that they only invited a “smaller popular” group like Cignature because their agency did not charge any fees for the girls’ appearance. They said, “We focused on creating the best show with the lowest cost possible and decided to cast a girl group that doesn't cost anything to perform at our show.” Fans and non-fans found the statement humiliating and are slamming the university for being so rude to Cignature.

‘Hurts me to see that letter’

Knetizens were upset as one posted, “They should've just stopped after saying that the girl group did not cost any fee. Why did they have to talk about the popularity, I think that's very rude.” Another said, “I feel sad for Cignature. I hope they'll hit big so that they wouldn't be treated like this again.” One added, “I'm not a fan of Cignature, but it hurts me to see that letter.” One fan tweeted, “Those university students are so ungrateful. their student-led association works hard to put on a concert for them, and they’re upset because one of the performances is CIGNATURE??? 2020 roty nominee? singers of platinum best sellers arisong, assa, and boyfriend? give me a break.”

Another wrote, “You asked artist to perform but expecting not to pay them any fees, you think musician made free shows? this is so disgusting in so many levels. cignature don’t deserve to get that treatment.” One fan added, “This is wrong on so many levels. cignature i love u and u deserve more than this sh*t.” Another shared, “Imagine cignature didn’t even need to do that and were just like legs do something sweet for the kids then come online and see their business being aired out… goddamn.”
