'Chicago P.D.' season 7: Will Hank Voight's underhanded ways finally see him face the consequences?

Jason Beghe's Hank Voight has consistently been seen as an anti-hero through the show. Will his dark methods finally put him on the other side of the interrogation table?
PUBLISHED SEP 18, 2019

Henry "Hank" Voight is a Sergeant at District 21 and leads the Intelligence Unit whose cases are the focus of the episodes of Dick Wolf's 'Chicago P.D.'.  When we first met him in 'Chicago Fire', he was suspected to be a dirty cop and while the man may not be on the wrong side of the law blatantly, he still has questionable methods that he uses to get things done. From physical violence to psychological torture, Voight does not think twice about a suspect if they are standing in the way of figuring out who the criminal of the episode is.

'Chicago P.D' more or less tried to redeem Voight but his ways have still raised not just viewers' eyebrows but those on his team as well. While some go along with him, there are members of his team that raised concerns with the way he approaches things. For the most part, it would look like Voight is out of the reach of anyone who wants to hold him responsible, and certainly many have tried.

As far as the team is considered, Alvin Olinsky was Voight's right-hand and most trusted confidante on the team (until his death of course). Olinsky himself was not a clean-cut guy and while many can argue his intentions were good, do the ends really justify the means? Olinsky's actions caught up to him after he was arrested covering up for Voight. He was killed in prison. Even Ruzek seems to go along with Voight's ways. When he joined the Intelligence Unit, he did so straight out of the academy and so most of his views have been shaped by Voight's guidance.

The people who seemed most uncomfortable with what Voight does are Antonio and Halstead. In one episode, the team is even divided between Antonio and Voight, but when Voight's way solves the case, he seems to agree that they work. While Halstead has not always been vocal about his opposition to Voight (Voight did tell Halstead in the season 6 finale that the team will be his one day), he does start to suspect Voight towards the end of the season.

Indeed, when newly-elected Mayor Kelton is found dead, it would seem Halstead (and the viewers) immediately suspect Voight. This has happened before, however. Remember Sheldon Jin from Season 1? When Voight finds out that Jin is talking to Internal Affairs behind his back, they "go for a drive" and in the season finale Jin ends up shot dead. It's only in the next episode that it is revealed that it was, in fact, Jin's IA handler that did the deed even though Voight was suspected heavily.

Will that be the case this time as well? Voight was seen driving away from Kelton's house but not actually shooting him. This could just be a red herring from the writers, with Voight being innocent again. Or perhaps, Voight does cross the line this time. If he does, will he pay for his crime or will the Intelligence Unit be covering up for him?

Season 7 of 'Chicago P.D.' will start airing on NBC on September 25th, 2019.
