'Bad, vile and harrowing': Marilyn Monroe biopic 'Blonde' slammed for being an insufferable NC-17 adaptation
Andrew Dominik’s highly anticipated and fictionalized take on Marilyn Monroe’s life, titled ‘Blonde’, has finally made its way to Netflix and fans are flocking the streaming platform to see why the movie is receiving such polarizing reviews from the critics. Based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, the movie primarily focuses on the personal life of Monroe and all the abuse she endured throughout her life. Whether it was her mother or her love life, the abuse never stopped.
Ana de Armas gives a career-defining performance and carries the entire movie on her shoulders. Meanwhile, Dominik uses his unique style to tell a story that’s really tragic and uncomfortable. It’s one of those rare movies that delved deeper into Monroe’s internal battle and showed why there was so much of sadness behind that million-dollar smile. However, it seems fans are disappointed with the way Dominik has chosen to showcase Monroe’s life in the movie and feel that the film does a disservice to her and her legacy.

Fans flooded social media with extreme reactions and called the movie a “harrowing” experience with a “disgusting intention” to assassinate the character of one of the iconic figures of Hollywood. One of the fans wrote, “Everyone involved in #BlondeNetflix should be made to go to her grave and apologize. None of the original light to contrast the darkness, her open sexuality is denied and made a never-ending rape, etc. Monroe documentaries, using her words, serve her better.” Another social media user wrote, “#Blonde is almost 3 hours of trauma sadistic voyeurism + porn. It defiles Marilyn Monroe’s memory and its baseless character assassination. I have never seen such a bad movie with such a disgusting intention from the makers”.

“Marylin Monroe, I am so sorry. They really made disgusting porn instead of a good biopic,” wrote another user. “That blonde movie was the worst mistake of my life, I really thought it was going to be about her legacy… it turned out to be something so fucking vile, and apparently the director's a misogynist. Don’t waste your time watching it, it’s not a love letter to her,” tweeted another user. “I’m sorry but this movie made me so uncomfortable. They did Marilyn so dirty, they made her look like a complete fool. The fictional or amplified storyline was disgusting! I was hoping for something better, she was much more than what they portrayed her as,” wrote another one.

Another social media user wrote, “#Blonde isn’t very good. Gratuitous”.
Since its debut at this year’s Venice Film Festival, the movie has been facing a lot of criticism for telling a story about how Hollywood exploited one of its finest talents. On the other hand, a large section of viewers has also been unhappy with Dominik being “unapologetic” about the uncomfortable things shown in the movie.
Nevertheless, the movie is now available for streaming exclusively on Netflix, and people should watch it and form their own opinion.
