Explosive 'Dune 3' trailer pits Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides against Robert Pattinson's Scytale
'Dune 3' finally has a trailer, and the stacked cast returns for one final battle and what promises to be an epic conclusion to the space opera. Denis Villeneuve's major release for the year, alongside the much-awaited 'Avengers: Doomsday,' dropped the first trailer on Tuesday.
Returning are Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach De Bankolé, with Charlotte Rampling, with Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem. The trailer also features newcomers Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke.
The story sees a major time jump and is set 17 years after the events of 'Dune: Part II'. The new clip teases Chalamet's Paul Atreides in a new avatar and introduces Pattinson as the complex villain.
The trailer opens with Paul and Chani in happier times, brainstorming baby names. "If we have a girl, what should we name her?" Chani asks. "Her name should be Ghanima. She would need to be strong like her mother," Paul responds, then asks, "What if it’s a boy?" Chani replies: “I would name him Leto, so he would have the wisdom of his grandfather."
The scene shifts to the action sequences with all major characters shown in fleeting glimpses. "War feeds on itself," Chalamet says in a despondent-sounding voiceover. "The more I fight, the more enemies fight back. I’m doing the best I can to protect my family."
He's seen turning to his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), for counsel. "How did father do it?" and Ferguson has a crisp reply: "Your father never started a war." Bardem's Fremen leader, Stilgar, and Taylor-Joy’s Alia Atreides get some screentime as well, but the major highlight is Pattinson's shape-shifting antagonist, Scytale.
The clip ends with Paul in a buzz cut saying, “I’m not afraid to die, but I must not die yet." The action sequences promise another exhilarating experience, much like its predecessors.
In related news, Pattinson shared his experiences working on 'Dune 3'. Per Variety, "I absolutely adored these movies, saw them multiple times in the theater. I was like, 'How do I get in one of those Dune movies?' It was a very unexpected call a few months later," the 'Tenet' star said.
He continued, "They’re such a towering achievement by the cast," Pattinson continued. "Everybody wants to work with Denis; he’s a master. And when you see the scope and scale and ambition of these movies, like on set, you get why they feel like this on the screen. It’s just extraordinary." Pattinson also teased Scytale: "You can’t really tell whose side he’s on. That’s kind of what makes him quite interesting. I wouldn’t say he’s a conventional bad guy, as such. He might even be a good guy. Who knows? I will also find out when I see the movie. It’s an extremely fun character to play, and the look of it is quite extraordinary."
The blockbuster is slated to release on December 18. In the meantime, fans can catch the first two films on Netflix, Hulu, and Max.
