Prime Video releases 'Jack Ryan: Ghost War' trailer as John Krasinki is set to take on an unknown force
Old habits never die for John Krasinski's Jack Ryan. From a CIA analyst looking at illegal transactions in the Middle East to saving the world countless times, Ryan's come a long way. In 'Jack Ryan: Ghost War,' Krasinski returns as the titular character after his hit Prime Video action-thriller series ended with four seasons in 2023.
The trailer for the latest film was released earlier on Tuesday. Returning faces include Wendell Pierce as James Greer, the deputy director of the CIA; Michael Kelly as Mike November, a former CIA station chief turned private security contractor; and Betty Gabriel as Elizabeth Wright, the CIA director. The new cast also includes McKenna Bridger, Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge, JJ Feild, and Sienna Miller, and the movie is set to release on the streamer on May 20.
The logline reads, "Jack Ryan is reluctantly thrust back into the world of espionage when an international covert mission unravels a deadly conspiracy, forcing him to confront a rogue black-ops unit, and the clock is ticking. Operating in real time with lives on the line and the threat escalating at every turn, Jack reunites with battle-tested CIA operative Mike November and former CIA boss James Greer, their combined experience the only edge they have against an enemy who knows their every move. Backed by an unlikely new partner -- razor-sharp MI6 officer Emma Marlowe -- Jack and the team navigate a treacherous web of betrayal, facing a past they thought was long put to rest -- making this the most personal, high-stakes mission any of them has ever faced."
'Ghost War' will be directed by 'Ozark's Andrew Bernstein, based on a script penned by Aaron Rabin and Krasinski.
The series was a tremendous hit with critics and fans. Krasinski and Pierce's performances were widely praised. Per Rotten Tomatoes, the critics' consensus reads, "Though not as thematically rich as some of its geopolitical predecessors, Jack Ryan is a satisfying addition to the genre, buoyed by exceptional action sequences and a likable cast."
Last year, Krasinski weighed in on the film, highlighting one major difference. "We were so excited to do a movie. As much as the longform storytelling was a whole different ballgame to play in, it's really fun to reduce it down and condense the timeline and therefore the tension," Krasinski told Collider. "So, we're getting to do all the big fun action movie stuff that we didn't get to do in a television show."
'Ghost War' is the sixth film in the 'Jack Ryan' franchise. Created after the fictional character from renowned author Tom Clancy, Alec Baldwin played the role in 'The Hunt for Red October' in 1990. Harrison Ford suited up in the next two movies: 'Patriot Games' and 'Clear and Present Danger'.
The role was taken over by Ben Affleck in 'The Sum of All Fears' and Chris Pine in the 2014 reboot, 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit'. Krasinski later starred in the series, which began in 2018. All four seasons of 'Jack Ryan' are available for streaming on Prime Video.
