'Avatar: The Way of Water' crosses $1 billion internationally, becomes 12th highest-grossing movie of all time

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ might have taken 13 years to release in theatres, but it’s leaving no stone unturned to create massive records at the box office in just three weeks of its release. A couple of days before it was reported that ‘The Way of Water’ has become the 14th highest-grossing movie of all time and was nearing $1 billion overseas. So, the day has finally arrived and James Cameron’s second movie in the ‘Avatar’ franchise has crossed the billion-dollar mark internationally in just 23 days.

The movie sees Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and their family leading a happy in the lush forests of Pandora. However, they soon realize that the Sky people will continue to destroy the forests till the time they are here and decide to leave. They travel across the ocean to meet a new tribe named Metkayina and start living there. They learn all the new traditions and make new friends as well. But the danger is close now and Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) has returned for revenge. ‘The Way of Water’ is more emotional than the first one and sees Jake taking extreme decisions to save his family. Viewers are absolutely loving the latest movie and flocking to the theatres in large numbers.

As per the latest figures by Box Office Mojo, the movie has grossed over $1 billion in international markets, becoming the 10th movie to earn the aforementioned amount in cinema history. With these staggering numbers, the movie has now earned more than $1.48 billion worldwide, just $6 million short of what ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ earned during its theatrical run. The figures also indicate that the film is now the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time, surpassing movies such as ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ ($1.403 billion), and ‘Frozen II’ ($1.45 billion).

Analysts believe that the film is going to cross movies like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ ($1.49 billion), ‘Furious 7’ ($1.515 billion), and ‘The Avengers’ ($1.508 billion) in the coming days.

The estimates have recently revealed that it will cross the $2 billion mark globally and if it does, Cameron will be responsible for three of the six-highest grossing movies in history, including ‘Avatar’ ($2.9 billion) and ‘Titanic’ ($2.2 billion). ‘Avatar’ is still the highest-grossing movie of all time.

Meanwhile, domestically, the movie is now the 2nd highest-grossing movie of 2022 with earnings of $457.4 million.

'Avatar: The Way of Water’ is set a decade after the events of the first film and tells the story of the Sully family and the troubles that follow them. The family will do anything to keep each other safe and they fight the battle to keep the entire tribe safe from the wrath of humans.
