In a May 1 interview on Alex Cooper's 'Call Her Daddy' podcast, Maria revealed that she was not just a contender but the top contender for casting. "I was offered the role." She added, "I mean, it was mine until I said it wasn’t," and that she had even gone so far as to do fittings for her Bachelorette debut. She stated, "It was set in stone. I was it."
Maria mentioned that one of the primary reasons she decided to pass on the show was her relationship with Jenn Tran, the future Bachelorette. "She was one of my closest girls in the house, and she was always verbalizing how badly she wanted this," she said. "And when everyone around me was so supportive of me being in this position ... I kind of took a second, like, Why am I not happy? Why am I not excited about this?"
She realized that she wasn't ready to embark on the journey and wasn't in the "right headspace." While she acknowledged that a Maria Bachelorette season "would've been great," she preferred to return home and spend time with her loved ones.
Reiterating her compliments from After the Final Rose, Maria praised Jenn's casting, describing her as "amazing." "She is the most perfect Bachelorette in my eyes," she declared on 'Call Her Daddy'. “I couldn’t think of anyone better to do this, and she was so ready for it. And that was enough for me to say, It’s not my time.”
When asked why, the Canada-based Bachelor graduate said she wasn't prepared to give up any degree of independence for another hectic production process because she had been "so anxious" during Joey's season. “It’s so isolating being in there ... having to be alone in that, I wasn’t comfortable,” she stated. “I wasn’t mentally prepared for it.”
