SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: 2022 MAMA Awards is on the horizon, and K-pop fans have already started speculating about who is truly deserving of the award night's biggest prize — the Daesang. While BTS swooped in and picked up the Daesang at the Korean Music Awards, many fans are guessing Blackpink will bring the prize home at the upcoming MAMA Awards. Even though BTS bagged the grand prize last year, there is a possibility that Blackpink wrests it from them, this time.

The world's No 1 K-pop awards released a teaser on September 27 signaling their return at the end of the year. CNM, the company behind MAMA, revealed the grand event will last two days, November 29-30, at Kyocera Dome Osaka, Japan, in August. The much-awaited awards will be broadcasted and streamed on many global platforms including YouTube. Previously, MAMA awards went by the title Mnet to which the company stated, "We are rebranding 'Mnet Asian Music Awards' to 'MAMA Awards' in line with changes in the global music market, such as the expansion of K-pop's influence from Asia to the world. We will present shows and stages with their own iconic scenes. We will expand and evolve from MAMA, which has introduced K-pop to the world, and become the World’s No.1 K-pop Awards to promote the true value of K-pop in the world.”

Who will win Daesang at MAMA Awards 2022?

It appears that fans on Twitter are not thrilled with the "world's No 1 K-pop awards" because of the chaos that unfolds after the awards have been distributed. Many fans even call the event 'rigged' while some blame the record labels for pursuing illegal means to get awards for their groups and solo artists. The award show is yet to reveal any information besides its official return in November 2022. This has led to fans questioning whether their favorite idols would be present at the event. However, the main discussion remains: Who will win Daesang at the 2022 MAMA Awards?

While BTS was an easy win last year, Blackpink could bring it home in 2022 because of their evidently high sales for 'Born Pink'. Their latest album broke almost every record on the chart. Moreover, it also became #1 in the highest album sales chart. The studio album sold 1.5 million copies in its first week. The track 'Shut Down' from the full-length album landed at No 1 on the Billboard Global charts.

BTS, on the other hand, have also had a promising year with their album, 'Proof'. The June 2022 release sold 4.52 million copies in the first half of the year. According to Soompi, the album bagged a total of 2,752,496 copies in the first week. Things are quite similar for both the K-pop groups since BTS debuted at No 1 on Billboard 200 with the biggest sales week for a group in 2022. Now, all this could hint at a clash for the Daesang between the biggest K-pop groups of the third generation at the 2022 MAMA Awards. Fans certainly think so. Already there are tweets saying the awards are "rigged" and most are anticipating a "k-pop fan war" between Blinks and Army, with each cheering their faves in tweets.
