The years 2020 and 2021 have been breakthrough years for the Korean entertainment industry as the K-pop, as well as the K-drama worlds, saw an all-time high with K-pop acts like BTS and Blackpink holding fort internationally as well as fourth-gen acts like aespa and Enhypen dominating charts worldwide. K-dramas and Korean movies also seem to have garnered their fair share of attention with fans all over the world watching dramas like ‘Squid Game’ on Netflix. Now, the hit show is winning multiple awards, first at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards and now again at the 2022 Golden Globes.
With the release of ‘Squid Game’, a lot of attention was paid to the actors that starred in the eight episode show. Their characters became inspirations for even Halloween costumes in 2021. It seems like the hype around the K-drama won't slow down anytime soon as the cruel grandfather from the show, actor Oh Yeung-su (Oh Young-soo) who played the character of Oh Il-Nam also known as Player 1 became the first Korean actor to bag a win at the 2022 Golden Globes.
Oh Yeong-su bags first Golden Globe
While the award show itself is being called out for its lack of diversity, the 79th Golden Globes awards were announced online on January 9 at 9 pm ET, after the 'Hollywood Boycott'. South Korean actor Oh Yeung-su became the first actor from his country to win a Golden Globe after he won the title for the 'Best Supporting Actor' in the Television category for his role as Oh Il-nam in 'Squid Game.'
Oh Yeong-su, upon hearing the news of his historic win has shared his feelings about being the first Korean actor to bag an award at the American awards show. Netflix released his statement on January 10, where he said, “After hearing the news of the award, I said to myself, ‘I'm a decent guy’ for the first time in my life.”
