'1883' Episode 6 Review: A dive into matters of the heart, fractured and healing

'1883': What role does Rita Wilson play? Here's how she enters show in Episode 6

In the seventh episode of the series we saw newcomer Sam (Martin Sensmeier), a Comanche warrior, forge a friendship with Elsa with the two even sharing a spontaneous kiss when they looked death in the eyes as the tornado that struck, put their lives in danger. The native ends up saving her life once more along with James' when faced with a bandit attack. The eighth episode saw Elsa and Sam's relationship get even deeper than before. Elsa's love for the wild plains has grown along with her love for Sam, with her deciding to not go to Oregon with her family as she will most definitely have to relapse into life in a society where she will be expected to be a proper lady, marry and have kids.

Her decision to stay back isn't taken well by her parents when Sam shows up with a horse to give James in exchange for his daughter's hand. Later on, having a heart-to-heart with his wife James acknowledges that Elsa gets her spirit from him. We also see him be impressed by Sam's responsible behaviors but asks him what will he do if Elsa changes her mind about him as she is young and tends to fall in love easily, to which he says that he'll bring her back to them if that's what she wants. After a day of Elsa hunting and imbibing the way of the Comanche, Margaret (Faith Hill) has a chat with her daughter and asks her to at least have a proper ceremony. But Elsa feels no need to take God's permission saying that God only sent her Sam. She promises her mother she'll ride with them to Oregon but will return to Sam in the spring.

After a night of lovemaking under the stars, Elsa wakes up to see that Sam left her a traditional necklace and attire that signifies their matrimony. He will not be leaving his land with the journey of the two coming to a halt for the time being. A tearful goodbye sees Elsa don the attire as Sam declares in his native tongue that he loves her, telling her this land is her home and that he will be waiting for her. He goes on to say that she has his whole heart and to know she is the wife of a warrior and a warrior herself. Kissing each other goodbye, Elsa ignores the looks of pity as she rides ahead with the resilience of a warrior who has her head high.

'1883' returns with new episodes on Paramount+ on Sundays.
