After losing his wife and daughter to smallpox, Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) is a broken man from within but tough as nails otherwise. Deciding not to take his life he and his accomplice Thomas (LaMonica Garrett) set on for a job and on their way first encounter James Dutton (Tim McGraw) who quite superbly defends his wagon and good from letters with an expert aim and determination to protect what's his. Brennan and Thomas laud him for his skill but are brushed off due to being spectators and not trying to help.
At Hell's Half Acre in Fortworth, Texas James waits for his family who will be arriving by train soon while the other two take up the arduous task of helping a group of travelers cross the Great Plains. Things look harder when Brennan earns that none of them speak English barring one man, do not have firearms of any sort, and have carried way too much luggage. He knows the danger that awaits in the Plains and is frustrated. He and Thomas later run into James who has already gotten himself in the spotlight in town when he shot a thief and learn that both parties are headed the same way. Brennan needs men and tries to recruit James who firmly refuses saying he has family arriving and that he wants nothing to do with them. James whose party consists of four women and a child later sees trouble when his daughter is almost raped by a drunk man in the hotel which makes him consider the value of having more men to help.
This sees him approach Brennan later on firmly telling him that he won't work for him but will just ride together which Brennan is pleased to hear as he too needs a good shooter in their troop which he knows the journey requires. The end of the episode sees Thomas and Brennan take the travelers and meet up with the Dutton family as they prepare to start the hard and perilous journey North.
This marks the beginning of a new partnership with the story just starting.
