Episode 6 sees the traveling troop make a stop to buy supplies, trade, and more before they continue their arduous journey to Oregon. This includes half of them going to a trader's post, which sees Margaret (Faith Hill), Elsa (Isabel May), and James Dutton (Tim McGraw) ride in. Now we previously saw Elsa lose her new love Ennis (Eric Nelsen) in the fifth episode, and grief causes her to create a scene at the trading post where she almost shoots a man. This event greatly distresses her mother who sends her back before carrying on with her shopping.

While browsing through a store in Doan's Crossing, Margaret is greeted by the store owner, and lo behold! it's none other than Rita Wilson herself! She offers Margaret a lemonade but after being refused offers her a much stronger drink asking, "How 'bout a whiskey punch?", saying she could use it. She accepts and asks if she would join her to which Carolyn ie Rita Wilson's character laughingly replies, "Sister, I've been joining you since noon."

Relating to the stress and worries that come with being a mom, the two enjoy an afternoon of drinking and get drunk laughing and giggling over random things. Wilson and Hill who are best friends in real life made a fun pairing and their comfort level with each other shone through. John who told his wife to stay there, later finds the two comfortably snoozing after passing out from the whiskey punch. This is how '1883' incorporated Rita Wilson in the sixth episode for a fun, chirpy cameo.

'1883' returns with new episodes on Paramount+ on Sundays.
