Who is Yung Baby Tate?

Born on May 13, 1996Tate Sequoya Farris is the daughter of soul singer Dionne Farris and musician/producer David Ryan Harris. Growing up, she wasn't close to her father seeing that she had little contact with him, but her mother encouraged her musical career, seeing that she began playing the piano at a young age and even produced her own beats at 13.

While talking to XXL Magazine how her mother's music choices helped her diversify her own taste. "My mom has always exposed me to a lot of different music. When I'd come up to New Jersey, I'd be listening to the old school like Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Marvin Gaye, those types of people. But then I also grew up listening to the Atlanta shit—Migos, Future, Gucci Mane. I also really loved CeCe Peniston, Nicki Minaj." she explained.

She released her first EP in 2015

Yung Baby Tate has been on the music scene since 2015, seeing that she released ROYGBIV that year and her Christmas-themed EP YBTXMAS the following year. At the start of her career, she often performed in Atlanta.  "Downtown, that's I first started doing shows, and around Edgewood is where I really kind of came up as an artist," she explained, while talking to ABC Radio Online.

"It was like growing up in Atlanta. A lot of culture, the hip-hop, the music scene, a lot of it came from Atlanta and from the East Side, specifically, but Atlanta in general. So it was really like being in the coolest place in the world because everyone was super influenced," she added. Her full-length album, 'Girls', came in 2019 and was named as one of the best hip-hop projects of 2019 by XXL. In 2020, she was signed on by Issa Rae's record label Raedio.

Yung Baby Tate writes and produces all of her music. "I think I was able to bypass a lot of that because I do everything myself. I write, I produce, I do my own creative direction. I know that might not be possible for everyone, but I'd say learning how to do as much as you can by yourself, so you don't have to rely on anyone to get it done for you, is a good way to get past that," she said while talking to MTV.
