'Worst Cooks in America' Season 28 production halted as crew members go on strike seeking 'fair wages'

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Food Network's 'Worst Cooks in America' brings a series of compelling challenges that put to test the culinary skills of contestants. 

However, the show's production was halted when crew members went on strike.

Production of the Season 28 of 'Worst Cooks in America' was put on hold after around 50 crew members in the camera, grip and electric and set decoration department decided to go on a strike.

Crew members on the show have gone on strike, seeking a union contract and representation by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. 

 Why did 'Worst Cooks in America' seek IATSE representation?

The crew members, who are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), were reportedly protesting against long work hours and low pay.

The IATSE is a union that represents workers in the entertainment industry, including those involved in the production of television shows and movies.

The union has been negotiating with Optomen Productions, seeking better working conditions and fair pay for its members. However, the negotiations broke down, and the union called for a strike. 

The strike affected the production of 'Worst Cooks in America' Season 28, which was being filmed in New York City. The show's contestants and crew members were sent home, and production was put on hold until the labor dispute could be resolved.

The main issue that led to the strike was the union's demand for better working conditions for its members. The IATSE had been seeking improved meal breaks, rest periods, and overtime pay for its members who work long hours on film and TV sets.

The union also wanted to address the issue of "excessive hours," which refers to the practice of working crew members for extended periods without adequate rest.

The studio Objective Media Group has confirmed that the labor conflict has resulted in the shutdown of production in New York.

They stated that due to the IATSE’s demand for recognition on behalf of the production crew and their inability to reach an agreement with the union, Season 28 of 'Worst Cooks in America' has been shut down.

WGA and SAG-AFTRA's strike on its 112th day

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) went on strike in May 2023, after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) broke down.

The strike, which still continues for 112 days, has had a significant impact on the entertainment industry, with many TV shows and movies being put on hold or delayed. In July 2023, Hollywood actors of SAG-AFTRA joined the screenwriters in a strike for better pay and working conditions
