LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 is set to premiere on HBO Max on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
Serving as the prequel to the beloved series 'Game of Thrones,' fans who dedicated a decade to the Westerosi saga found themselves longing for the snowy vistas of Winterfell during the first season of 'House of the Dragon.'
'House of the Dragon' revolves around the events within House Targaryen, with the majority of the series' pivotal moments unfolding in King's Landing amid a war of succession.
With House Targaryen divided into two factions, the Blacks backing Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and the Greens supporting Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and her son Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), tensions escalate within the realm of Westeros.
As the teaser and trailers for the second season were released, fans of the franchise were delighted to catch glimpses of familiar snowy landscapes and characters adorned in iconic black fur coats.
So is Winterfell making a return to 'House of the Dragon', here's what we know:
Jacaerys Velaryon travels to Winterfell
'House of the Dragon' kicks off the Dance of the Dragons, a civil war between two factions of House Targaryen. Both Queen Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent are seeking allies as they prepare for war.
According to 'Fire and Blood,' the book on which 'House of the Dragon' is based, Prince Jacaerys 'Jace' Velaryon (Harry Collett), the son of Rhaenyra Targaryen, journeys to Winterfell to ally with Lord Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor).
As per the book, Cregan and Jace indeed form a significant alliance. Furthermore, when Jace witnesses what lies beyond the Wall, it raises the stakes for the impending battle even higher.
Rise of Lord Cregan Stark
Lord Cregan Stark will emerge as a pivotal character in the events following the Dance of the Dragons, particularly during the succession of Aegon III Targaryen, the son of Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Rhaenyra Targaryen, to the throne after the civil war.
Lord Cregan and Jace swear an oath of brotherhood, and when Jace tragically dies in the Battle of Gullet, Cregan marches south with a large army and establishes order as the Hand of the King.
The event will come to be known as the Hour of the Wolf, during which Cregan Stark aids the young King Aegon in his early reign in King's Landing. After guiding the realm through this tumultuous period, Cregan eventually returns to Winterfell.
Cregan's legacy will remain unmatched in the North as he lived a long life and navigated Winterfell through a series of events. However, 'House of the Dragon' is anticipated to depict events only up to the Hour of the Wolf.
