What to expect from 'The Abandons' Season 2? Netflix's western drama ends as a humdinger of a debut
'The Abandons' cliffhanger has already begun generating buzz on what the plotline could be in season 2. It's worth noting that the female-led western is yet to be renewed for a new season. However, such has been the reception to the show that another instalment shouldn't come as a surprise.
The series sets itself up for a second instalment with a riveting cliffhanger. With the uncertainty of the characters who survived the no-holds-barred fight in the attic, the new season puts focus firmly on Fiona Nolan (Lena Headey) and asks the question of the fate of Constance Van Ness (Gillian Anderson). The open-ended finish likely sees Fiona winning, but also Constance, or let the latter die in flames. This would also mean the end for Anderson on the show.
Should that indeed be the case, the likes of Trisha (Aisling Franciosi) and Garret (Lucas Till) taking her place might add another layer to season 2's storyline. Per CBR, the new installment also needs to address Samara (Katelyn Wells) betraying Fiona and the group. There is also that question of Miles' (Ryan Hurst) next move now that Garret knows of his past. Will this mean that he will work for the Van Ness family? Only time will tell.
Earlier, executive producer Chris Keyser addressed the finale. "Fiona is certainly a hero in a sense," he told Tudum. Constance has a pretty strong argument that the good of the whole of the community requires some compromise over the land that the Abandons sit on, while Fiona “stands up for people for whom no one else would take a stand. She’s created a family out of nothing and taken care of people who needed to be taken care of. She’s defending her right to something that she actually owns. And in that sense, in a very American way, she’s a hero."
Keyser also weighed in on who won in the end. "I don’t think anyone needs to win that argument, whether one is better than the other," the EP said. "To try to rank those kinds of families is a foolish, meaningless game. … Love is love. There’s no question that the world would’ve considered Constance’s family a valid family and would’ve diminished the meaning of the family ties of Fiona’s. It encourages a broader, more generous way of thinking about life."
