Is 'The Abandons' based on a true story? Netflix's new series is a brutal frontier showdown you can't miss
Netflix is saddling up for one of its most intense period dramas yet. It's bringing together two powerhouse actresses for a showdown that promises bloodshed, betrayal, and a fight for survival on the unforgiving American frontier. 'The Abandons' arrives as a raw, character-driven Western where land means power, loyalty is fragile, and two women at the center of it all are prepared to burn the world down before they back down. But is this tale of ruthless matriarchs and clashing families pulled from real American history? Or is Netflix crafting its own sweeping frontier legend from scratch?
Though its dust-covered world feels authentic, ‘The Abandons’ is not a true story. According to Netflix's Tudum, the series is set in 1854 in the Washington Territory and draws heavily from the recurring tension that defined the American West: the constant conflict between wealthy landowners and vulnerable settlers trying to carve out a life in a system stacked against them. Executive producer Christopher Keyser told Tudum that the show's first chapter is a "classic American story," rooted in the eternal struggle over land, class, and power. At its core is a brutal conflict between two families who are simultaneously at war and intertwined by forbidden affection.

The themes of corruption, violence, survival, and the fragile hope of building a future echo real frontier battles. But the characters, the feud, and the drama are entirely fictional. And according to IMDb, The 10-episode first season is set to drop in full on December 4. The series is going to thrust viewers into the bloodstained heart of the Old West. In this outlaw-riddled corner of the Washington Territory, Jasper Hollow becomes the battleground for a brutal territorial war. Two commanding widows stand at the center. Lena Headey as Fiona Nolan, a hardened, faith-driven leader who has built a makeshift family out of orphans and misfits.
She guards her land with devotion, seeing it as the only sanctuary her found family has ever known. Then there’s Gillian Anderson as Constance Van Ness. She’s a calculating person who will stop at nothing to expand her family’s mining empire. Their collision is immediate and explosive. As tensions build, ‘The Abandons’ weaves murder, clandestine romance, and territorial violence into a story that asks what defines a family and how anyone can hold on to morality in a landscape that rewards cruelty. Rounding out the ensemble cast is a rich lineup of rising and veteran talent.

Fiona’s camp includes Nick Robinson and Diana Silvers, both playing key members of her scrappy surrogate family. The Van Ness side counters with Lucas Till and Aisling Franciosi. Patton Oswalt adds political tension as Mayor Nibley, complicating the already high-stakes feud. So, while the show’s details come from the minds of its creators, ‘The Abandons’ taps into very real truths about 19th-century America.
