Has 'Chad Powers' been renewed? Glen Powell’s Hulu football comedy gets major season 2 update
Hulu is heading back onto the field with more comedy, more chaos, and a whole lot more Chad. The streamer has officially renewed ‘Chad Powers', Glen Powell's hit college football comedy, for a second season, as reported by Variety. The move comes as no surprise, given the show’s breakout success this fall. Premiering on September 30, the series quickly became a buzzy fan favorite thanks to its offbeat humor, heartfelt underdog story, and Powell's outstanding dual performance. Powell leads the comedy as Russ Holliday, once a golden-boy quarterback destined for greatness until a disastrous mistake in the national championship game derails his career.
Nearly a decade later, desperate for a second chance, Russ reinvents himself as "Chad Powers", an eccentric, gifted walk-on hoping to revive his dreams with the struggling South Georgia Catfish. The elaborate disguise, complete with wig, mustache, and swagger, becomes his gateway back into the world he lost. The show's ensemble cast has also earned praise. Perry Mattfeld, Quentin Plair, Wynn Everett, Frankie A. Rodriguez, and Steve Zahn round out the roster, bringing humor and heart to a story. 'Chad Powers' was born from a viral ESPN sketch featured on 'Eli's Places', according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In it, Super Bowl champion Eli Manning went undercover at Penn State's walk-on tryouts in a prosthetic disguise. That bit inspired Powell and co-creator Michael Waldron, known for 'Loki', 'Heels', and 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness', to develop the story into a full-blown scripted comedy. Manning now serves as an executive producer on the Hulu series, alongside Peyton Manning and the team at Omaha Productions, as well as ESPN's Burke Magnus, Brian Lockhart, Kati Fernandez, and others. Powell, Waldron, Adam Fasullo, Luvh Rakhe, and director Tony Yacenda also hold executive producer credits, with 20th Television backing the project.
Rumblings of a season 2 pickup first circulated in November, after a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution suggested the local crew had been informed that filming would resume in January. The renewal now confirms that momentum is already building behind the scenes. Powell and Waldron have teased where the story might head next, hinting at bigger stakes and a potentially expanded football landscape. Speaking to Variety after the Season 1 finale, Powell joked that his alma mater absolutely needs a seat at the table this time around.
"It's a make-or-break thing for me that the University of Texas be included," he said. "If I have to support the UGA football program and not the University of Texas one more time, I'm gonna break." While plot details remain under wraps, fans can expect more schemes, more sports chaos, and plenty of signature 'Chad Powers' absurdity as the series gears up for its sophomore season. For now, viewers can celebrate knowing that the most unpredictable walk-on in college football is officially lacing up for another round.
