'Fargo' Season 6 might happen but there is a catch that fans won't like
Based on the original 1996 cult classic movie directed by the Coen Brothers, 'Fargo' was a massive hit on FX when it first premiered in 2014. The show followed an anthology format, meaning that each new season covered a different crime escapade set against the country's hinterland. Season 5 of 'Fargo' came to an end with the finale episode titled 'Bisquik' airing on January 16, 2024. Since then, fans of the franchise have been eagerly waiting for a sixth season, which has been on and off the cards for some time.
Showrunner Noah Hawley, who happens to be among the busiest showrunners in the business, recently sat down with Deadline for a comprehensive interview. During the conversation, he was naturally asked about the status of 'Fargo' season six, to which he replied, "Those are conversations that are still ongoing – where it could fit." Hawley further added, "I hope to have an announcement about it soon. It’s great to see the enthusiasm is still there." As of now, Hawley is extremely busy, serving as co-showrunner of both the FX video game adaptation of 'Far Cry' and the sophomore season of 'Alien: Earth'. Nevertheless, one can not help but hope that Hawley will invest himself in developing Season 6 of 'Fargo' whenever he has the time.
The delay between Season 5 and 6 had been previously explained by FX Chairman John Landgraf in a July 2024 interview with Variety magazine wherein he had remarked, "We've told him that assuming, as we hope, Alien: Earth is a returning television series, we want him to focus on at least writing two seasons of it before returning to a possible sixth season of Fargo." Despite the delay, it is understood that Hawley is still committed to the show, and in another interview, he had spoken candidly about the possibility of Season 6: "I haven’t run out of ways to tell these stories, why wouldn’t I keep going?" If demonstrable success is a criterion of future renewals, then 'Fargo' is abundantly in the clear.
Season 5 of the Martin Freeman show earned six Emmy nominations, including one for best limited series. On the other hand, the cast members Juno Temple, Lamorne Morris, and Jon Hamm also earned Emmy nominations for best acting. In hindsight, the long waiting period between seasons has almost come to be recognized as a pattern for 'Fargo', since Season 4 aired three years after the Season 3 finale, and Season 5 premiered another three years after Season 4 came to an end. As of this writing, FX has not officially renewed 'Fargo' for Season 6.
