Noah Wyle reveals whether his character will adopt baby Jane Doe in 'The Pitt' Season 3: 'A baby is not…'
Dr. Robby's journey on the first two seasons of 'The Pitt' has been anything but smooth-sailing. The ER chief battled low-level depression and even entertained suicidal thoughts during his 4th of July shift in Season 2. But the season ended on a positive note for Noah Wyle's character as he is seen bonding with baby Jane Doe, who was abandoned in the hospital's bathroom at the start of the shift in episode 1. After Nurse Dana couldn't find anyone willing to foster the six-week-old baby, Robby assures the infant and himself that "everything’s gonna be just fine." During their short and sweet interaction, Robby also sheds light on his traumatic childhood: "I got abandoned, too. When I was eight. But I got through all of that, and so will you," he says while holding the infant in his arms.
Their bonding moment has led fans to question whether Robby will step up and adopt baby Jane Doe. On Thursday, Wyle addressed this fan theory while speaking to Savannah Guthrie on 'Today.' He said, "It has been told to us that a baby is not a life preserver. You should throw a drowning man a baby and hope everything will work out. We will touch on baby Jane Doe on Season 3, but whether or not that’s a match made in heaven is yet to be determined."
The 54-year-old actor also shared that he is looking forward to depicting his character's mental health journey, from struggling silently to finally getting help, in the show's next chapter. "It’s exciting to think of this as a mental health journey that we’re watching this man go on, from complete denial to the recognition that he needs help, and I think as the show continues, he’ll be making his ascension out of the pit, which will make it a much more pleasant headspace to occupy."
The showrunner, R. Scott Gemmill, spoke about what the scene means for Robby's declining mental health. In a conversation with TV Insider on April 16, Gemmill talked about Robby, "It’s the hope. I think Robby is getting as much comfort out of the baby as the baby is getting out of him. I think the baby is someone he actually says things to that he wouldn’t say to anyone else because he knows they don’t go anywhere. I think it’s a cathartic moment for him and gives him a little pause. And, in some ways, he finds a little refuge of the day in that child at the very end." Season 3 of 'The Pitt' will pick up four months later, with Gemmill hinting that Robby will turn a new leaf after returning from his sabbatical. "I think he needs the most work, and hopefully, that’s what his journey (in) Season 3 will be about." Fans can watch both seasons of 'The Pitt' only on HBO Max.
