Will 'High Potential' return for Season 3? Everything we know after Season 2's cliffhanger finale
ABC’s ‘High Potential’ is not slowing down anytime soon. Even before Season 2 could wrap things up, the network made it clear there’s more coming. Weeks ahead of the finale, the show officially got the green light for another installment. The announcement came through a joint Instagram post from ABC and the show, keeping things short and playful. “The case isn’t closed,” the caption read. “#HighPotential has been renewed for Season 3!” While the renewal itself wasn’t shocking, it’s the timing that stood out. Locking in another season before the final episode aired suggests strong confidence from the network. It also raised expectations and curiosity surrounding how Season 2 would end. And well, the finale definitely delivered on that front.
However, the series will be moving forward without its current showrunner, as per Deadline. Todd Harthan is stepping away after Season 2 to focus on a different project, a live-action adaptation of ‘Eragon’ for Disney+. A new showrunner hasn’t been named yet. Before stepping away, Harthan hinted at what viewers could expect from the Season 2 finale. He told the publication it would be “just as satisfying, if not even more exhilarating push-off into a potential Season 3.” The official cast for Season 3 hasn’t been confirmed yet, but most of the familiar faces are likely sticking around.
Kaitlin Olson, who leads the series, is expected to return, along with Judy Reyes and Daniel Sunjata. Other cast members, including Javicia Leslie and Deniz Akdeniz, also appeared in the renewal announcement video, which is usually a good sign. But not everyone’s future is as clear. Season 2 didn’t exactly wrap things up neatly. Morgan and Soto confronted Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey) over his ties to his father, a politician with a questionable history. To show he was on Morgan’s side, he intentionally misled her about when he was meeting an FBI contact connected to her missing ex. That half-hour gap ended up saving Morgan’s life. By the time she reached the location, he had already been shot and was lying there, badly wounded and losing blood. The episode then ends without revealing what happens next.
Furthermore, Deadline confirmed that Steve Howey will not continue as a series regular. That said, there’s still a possibility he could appear in Season 3 in a limited role. As of now, there’s no confirmed premiere date for Season 3. Production timelines will likely depend on when a new showrunner steps in and how quickly things move behind the scenes. In the meantime, fans can catch up or rewatch earlier episodes. Both Season 1 and Season 2 are currently available for streaming on Hulu.
