'The Rookie' star reprises familiar role in DC's 'Mister Miracle'
Nathan Fillion is returning to the DC Universe as Guy Gardner, but this time the Green Lantern is heading into animation. The actor will reprise the role in DC's upcoming adult animated series 'Mister Miracle.' Fillion first played Guy Gardner in the 2025 live-action 'Superman' movie. He later reprised the character in 'Peacemaker' Season 2 and HBO's 'Lanterns.' Fillion's return in 'Mister Miracle' marks another appearance as the outspoken Green Lantern.
Showrunner Tom King confirmed Fillion's casting in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. King praised Fillion's energy and said his portrayal fits Guy's larger-than-life personality across different DC projects. 'Mister Miracle' adapts King's acclaimed comic book series with artist Mitch Gerads. The story follows Scott Free, an escape artist known as Mister Miracle, and his wife, Big Barda.
After war breaks out between their native home worlds, Apokolips and New Genesis, their lives on Earth begin to fall apart. Scott’s adoptive father, Darkseid, discovers the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon that gives him control over the universe. The increasing tension places a heavy burden on Scott, as he must do everything to end the war and protect his family.
The series mixes superhero action with a much more personal story. Scott's struggle involves his marriage, his identity, and the trauma connected to his upbringing under Darkseid. Fillion's Guy Gardner is not the central character, but his return adds another familiar DC figure to the animated series. His previous appearances have established the character as an abrasive and outspoken Green Lantern.
The role gives Fillion another connection to the expanding DC screen universe. His best-known current role remains John Nolan in ABC's 'The Rookie,' where he plays a police officer who joins the Los Angeles Police Department later in life. Fillion's television career began in the 1990s. He gained wider attention as Joey Buchanan on 'One Life to Live,' a role that earned him a Daytime Emmy Award. He later starred as Johnny Donnelly in 'Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place' and Malcolm Reynolds in 'Firefly.'
He went on to lead ABC's 'Castle' as mystery writer Richard Castle for eight seasons. His work with the network continued with 'The Rookie,' which has become one of his longest-running television roles. 'Mister Miracle' now adds another major DC project to his growing list of credits. Fillion's return as Guy Gardner also keeps the character active across both live-action and animated stories as the DC Universe expands.
