SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: 2022 is a good year for TWICE and their fans, as the girl group is finally branching out as soloists, renewed their contract with JYPE successfully, broke the 7-year curse and are set to have their biggest comeback yet as ‘Between 1&2’ became their first album to cross 1 million pre-orders. TWICE is one of the biggest girl groups and single-handedly raised the net worth of their label, JYPE to 1 trillion won (~$815 million) in the first three months of 2022 with only their concerts.

TWICE was also the second K-pop act following BTS to have US stadium concerts and personally earned 50 billion won (~$38 million) in the first half of 2022 with only concerts. The general public of South Korea loves them while even non-fans know about them as they release at least one viral single every year like ‘The Feels', ‘TT’, ‘Cheer Up’, ‘Fancy’, ‘Feel Special’, and more. Unfortunately, despite TWICE’s popularity and debuting in 2015, ‘Between 1&2’ being released in 2022 is their first million-seller. And while fans are rejoicing, they are also slamming JYPE for mistreating the girl group.

TWICE get 1st million mark after 7 years

For the last few years, ONCEs (TWICE’s fandom) have been observing that TWICE’s albums are quickly out of stock or not restocked for months at end. During their last album release, ‘Formula of Love’ went out of stock twice during the pre-order period which confused many. Pre-orders are just a way to count how many albums need to be produced and so many wondered how the album could go out of stock. Some ONCEs also went as far as to claim that JYPE was not producing enough albums for TWICE so that they would not cross a million sales. With ‘Between 1&2’, TWICE still made a record as the third girl group to cross 1 million pre-orders.

It should be noted that while 1 million sales for an album is no easy feat, it has become relatively easier for K-pop acts to cross this achievement nowadays thanks to the immense popularity of the genre worldwide. We have had new and rookie groups like aespa, Enhypen, TXT, Treasure, and Stray Kids. On top of that, TWICE has proved its purchasing power by becoming the first girl group to earn $4.4 million with only two US concerts. With the girls finally crossing a million pre-orders for ‘Between 1&2’ in 7 years, the moment is bittersweet as celebrating fans feel this milestone could have been achieved much earlier for several deserving albums.

‘The most organic growth’

One fan tweeted, “Please if jype restocked and didn't limit the pre-order numbers they would have sold 1m copies since a long time ago jype is TWICE biggest hater and problem.” Another said, “Jype really hates twice. formula of love could've hit 1m pre-order copies if jype restocked.” One wrote, “Finally! 1M pre-order sales!!! This is what happend if you did your job properly~.” Another ONCE flexed, “The most organic growth in KPOP no big3 privilege and just TWICE being TWICE the record breaker.”
