LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The 'American Idol' Season 22 debut opened with a bang as auditions got underway from February 18, 2024 and on the debut episode itself, one standout moment featured Katy Perry nearly screaming in excitement during Kennedy Reid's audition. As Kennedy belted out Tina Turner's song, Katy passionately demanded "more of that," pointing at the ceiling to encourage Kennedy to sing with even more power.

At the conclusion of the performance, Katy couldn't contain her enthusiasm and gave Kennedy a standing ovation. Despite delivering a breathtaking performance, only two out of the three judges were convinced to send her to Hollywood. Lionel Richie suggested they play around but ultimately wanted to give Kennedy a chance, saying yes. Luke Bryan, however, was unsure and said no.

In a decisive moment, Katy Perry intervened, saying, "Let's give her a break from death and show her what life is all about." She gave Kennedy a yes, securing her ticket to Hollywood, making Reid one among the artists who earned a golden ticket on American Idol Season 22.

Who is 'American Idol' 22 star Kennedy Reid?

Kennedy Reid, a 23-year-old from Sellersberg, Indiana, has a unique background. She attended Silver Creek High School and, after graduation, pursued a career in mortuary science to become a funeral director and embalmer.

Growing up, Kennedy started singing in public during her teenage years, performing for residents in nursing homes. She eventually became a regular performer and emcee at the Grand Ole Country Music Show in West Point, Kentucky.

Aside from her musical pursuits, Reid works as a funeral director and embalmer at Spring Valley Funeral Home. Despite her work in the funeral industry, she nurtured her passion for singing, and her demo tape caught the attention of the American Idol producers. This led to her auditioning for the show in front of judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie.
