Why did CeeLo Green leave 'The Voice'? Coach's 2014 exit explained as he returns in exciting twist
CeeLo Green, one of the most iconic coaches, recently appeared on 'The Voice' in Season 29. He was one of the original coaches, but parted ways with the show after Season 5 in 2014. This came after he went on a hiatus during Season 4. Back then, Green mentioned in a statement that he wished to pursue other opportunities, saying, "NBC and I plan to continue our relationship with several new co-ventures including a new music show, while we also explore our ideas for me to create and host a new show of my own. I will not go quietly into the night… expect more great music and entertainment done in my own unique unmistakable and undeniable way." However, speculations were rife that he exited to avoid getting fired because of his legal issues at the time.
As per the LA County District Attorney's Office, Green, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, was accused by a 33-year-old woman of slipping ecstasy in her drink without her knowledge while they were dining at a downtown Los Angeles sushi restaurant. The duo then went back to the woman's hotel room. The incident reportedly took place sometime between July 13 and July 14, 2012. The then-39-year-old singer was charged with furnishing ecstasy to a female victim, while the sexual assault charges against him were dropped due to insufficient evidence.
According to CBS, before a preliminary hearing was about to commence, the singer pleaded no contest to the charge. The court sentenced the rapper to three years of formal probation. During this period, rumors swirled that NBC was set to fire him to distance itself from the charges. However, the artist mentioned he left due to the demanding nature of the job. "It easily and quickly became a job," he shared, as per Us Weekly. "Very, very obligating… Taxing and tiring… I still tip my hat to Adam [Levine] and Blake [Shelton] and those guys who continuously do it, but I think I ran my course there just naturally," he added. Green further said that he and the network "amicably" parted ways and that he left on a good note.
In 2015, Green made his wish known that he wanted to return to the show, according to Billboard. “I’ve talked very possibly about doing The Voice again,” he said. “So I just kind of put that out there, wishful thinking, kind of willing it. Because I would love to do it again.” His wish has finally come true, as he returned as a Mega Mentor in Season 29. During his time on the show, he will guide the teams led by Adam Levine and John Legend. He will also judge the artists participating in the in-season All-Star competition, which is a new addition to the series. It will see former contestants competing to help their coach earn a point. The coach with the most points will get an extra artist slot, which is a major advantage to have in the finale.
