Who is the new Lady Whistledown? ‘Bridgerton’ boss teases a more dangerous gossip queen ahead of Season 5
Dearest gentle reader, grab your tea and sit up straight because the ton just got blindsided! The Season 4 finale of ‘Bridgerton’ goes out with a bang as Penelope Featherington, long unmasked as the voice behind Lady Whistledown, has stepped away from the scandal sheet. Over the course of the season, Penelope finally saw the collateral damage that those cleverly sharpened pamphlets could cause. After a particular incident, she sought out the queen herself, determined to shut down the whole operation.
And in true Whistledown fashion, Penelope made the announcement publicly. At Cressida Cowper’s first grand event as Lady Penwood, stacks of freshly printed sheets circulated through the glittering crowd. While reading the pamphlets, guests gasped, and fans did too. The column was closing shop, or so everyone believed. Because here’s the kicker. By season’s end, it becomes crystal clear that someone else has picked up the quill. A new Lady Whistledown is now steering the ship, and Penelope herself looks rattled.
Now, this is where things get juicy. In TVLine’s chat with showrunner Jess Brownell, she admitted the series has swerved from the original blueprint laid out in Julia Quinn’s novels. Brownell expressed, “We get to create a genuine mystery now. Because it was in the books that Penelope was Whistledown, we never felt like we could really play with that mystery that much.” She essentially said they’ve thrown open the doors to something the novels never fully explored: an actual mystery. Brownell teased that it’s “definitely someone — or someones — in the world.” And no, the creative team isn’t winging it. According to Brownell, they’ve mapped it out carefully behind the scenes. When the reveal eventually arrives, audiences should be able to retrace the breadcrumbs and realize the clues were there, however faint. However, she admitted that those hints so far are “very minimal.”
If you’re hoping Season 5 will provide answers, you may want to sit down. Brownell made it clear that the identity of the new Whistledown will not be exposed next season. According to her, “It's definitely not going to be revealed in Season 5. I think we'll play with it for awhile.” One comforting constant remains. Julie Andrews will continue narrating the scandal sheets. That signature tone isn’t going anywhere. But there’s a twist even there. Brownell revealed that Andrews subtly adjusted her delivery in the final moments of Season 4 to reflect that a different personality now hides behind the words. And the new writer? Apparently not as measured as Penelope once tried to be. Brownell hinted that this fresh Whistledown is “really [swinging] for the fences.”
