‘American Idol’ contestant moves Carrie Underwood to tears and the reason has nothing to do with her voice
During the latest episode of ‘American Idol’ Season 24, a simple moment between a mom and her son ended up stealing the spotlight. The competition had already trimmed the field down to 30 hopeful singers, all of whom traveled to Hawaii for the show’s new stage, known as the ‘Ohana Round.’ Every contestant had to perform before a packed audience that included judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie. But this time, the judges weren’t the only ones watching closely. Fellow contestants, as well as friends and relatives, had a say too. On top of that, a panel of music industry insiders sat nearby, evaluating every note. Among those stepping onto the stage was Keyla Richardson, a 29-year-old singer from Pensacola, Florida, who already had a bit of a story attached to her journey.
During her earlier audition, she introduced the judges to her young son, Drew. Back then, Richardson performed the Pink track ‘Glitter in the Air,’ hoping to secure her place in the contest. And clearly it worked, because she made it to Hawaii with the rest of the singers. This time around, she chose a different ballad. Standing on stage during the ‘Ohana Round,’ Richardson delivered ‘A Thousand Years,’ originally recorded by Christina Perri. While Richardson focused on hitting every note, her son Drew watched from the crowd. The camera caught him passionately mouthing the lyrics along with his mom. Judge Carrie Underwood noticed right away, and she didn’t try to hide how much it affected her.
Speaking to Richardson afterward, the country star shared, “To have the gift of watching you and getting to watch him.” Underwood, who shares two sons with her husband Mike Fisher, admitted, “When I'm on stage, and my boys are out there, I don't know what they're doing. And I feel like I just got a glimpse of what they might be doing when I'm on stage, and it just made my mama heart so happy.” Underwood told Richardson that witnessing the connection between her and her son filled her with happiness, calling the singer’s talent “limitless.” By that point, the judge’s eyes were watery, and Drew himself appeared to be wiping away tears too. Once all the performances wrapped up, the show moved into decision mode, and votes came from three different groups.
Fellow contestants voted among themselves, though they weren’t allowed to select their own name. Friends and family members also cast votes, but again, they couldn’t choose their own relatives. Meanwhile, industry professionals weighed in as a third group. Each group picked one favorite performer. Those three singers received platinum tickets, which meant they automatically moved forward to the next phase of the contest. When the results were announced, Jordan McCullough was revealed as the choice among the contestants, while Brooks Rosser was the favorite among the friends and family. The industry insiders, on the other hand, placed their bet on Kyndal Inskeep. After the selections were made, the judges completed the Top 20 lineup, and Richardson earned a place in it.
